Falcon women lose at buzzer

OLEAN, N.Y. - Gellaine Clarke's breakaway layup beat the buzzer and lifted St. Bonaventure to an 87-85 victory over Bowling Green State University last night in women's basketball.

BG had the ball with 23 seconds left and the scored tied at 85. But following a missed 3-point shot by Dana Western, Falcon guard Kim Griech rebounded and shot in the paint but it was blocked and the Bonnies' Shannon O'Connell grabbed the ball and found Clarke streaking up court for the winning shot.

Melissa Fazio led St. Bonaventure (2-5) with 22 points. Clarke had 21.

Pam Brown topped the Falcons (2-4) with 22, hitting 11 of 14 shots. Dana Western tallied 16, Kim Griech had 15 and Lindsay Austin added 14.

After trailing 55-44 at half, BG scored 27 of the first 32 points of the second half to lead 71-60 with 11:58 left. St. Bonaventure responded with a 13-3 run.

A big difference was at the free-throw line where BG was just 5 of 13 to the Bonnies' 17 of 20.

BG shot 55 per cent (36 of 64) from the floor including 8 of 14 3-pointers. The Bonnies made 47 per cent (32 of 69; 6 of 12 3-pointers).

BG plays at 9 p.m. Friday at Arizona.
