Wenzel tallies 20 as Falcons hold off Zips' second-half rally

AKRON - Stephanie Wenzel scored 20 points as Bowling Green State University held off Akron 65-62 yesterday in Mid-American Conference women's basketball.

BG (11-13, 4-9 MAC) led 31-15 at halftime, thanks to 16 points by Wenzel, who was 7 of 11 from the floor in the first half.

The Falcons pushed their lead to 58-39 with 5:38 left in the game before the Zips (2-22, 1-12) made their run.

Akron scored the next 12 points to pull within 58-51 with 2:07 left. Wenzel's field goal at 1:39 ended the Falcons' drought.

Akron got as close as 63-61 on a layup by Cassandra Martin with 27 seconds left.

Francine Miller, who had 10 points and 11 rebounds, sealed it for BG with two free throws with 11 seconds left.

Kim Griech scored 17 for BG.

Dominique Harris led the Zips with 16 points.

The Falcons shot 40 percent (22 of 55) from the floor including 7 of 18 3-point attempts. Akron made 41 percent (21 of 51) including 6 of 14 treys.

At the free-throw line, BG hit 14 of 20 to the Zips' 14 of 23. The Falcons held a 39-33 rebounding edge.

Bowling Green will host Marshall at 7 p.m. Wednesday and travels to Kent State for a 2 p.m. game Saturday.
