BOWLING GREEN - Paul Krebs signed a contract that will keep him as Bowling Green State Univesity athletic director through June 30, 2009.

The five-year contract, which includes a base salary of $140,454 and bonuses based on team performance and academic achievement, actually was signed late last year and was retroactive to July 1, 2004.

"It was never announced because we were in the middle of finishing a couple of other contracts and I felt strongly that we needed to get those deals done," Krebs said. "I knew I had a contract, and I didn't feel it was important if other people knew it or not."

One of those deals was a five-year contract extension for women's basketball coach Curt Miller announced last October. The other was the final details on a two-year contract extension for football coach Gregg Brandon that was agreed upon the previous December.

"We were slowed down when our university attorney left in February," said Ed Whipple, vice president of student affairs and Krebs' boss. "With the contracts with coach Miller and coach Brandon, he and I both felt we had other,

more pressing things. We just never announced it."

Whipple said the delay in announcing the new contract did not reflect his opinion of Krebs' work.

"Overall, I think Paul has done excellent work that is reflected in a variety of ways," Whipple said. "It is reflected in the success of our programs, the good personnel we have in that department, and in his financial management of the department.

"We finished in the black last year, and for a MAC school to be in the black is quite an accomplishment."

Krebs came to Bowling Green on March 15, 1999 after spending 14 years at Ohio State, the last six as a senior associate athletic director.

"[My family and I] are very happy here," Krebs said.

"I feel fortunate to work for the people that I work for, especially the leadership of the university such as [university president] Dr. [Sidney] Ribeau, Dr. Whipple, the board of trustees and the various vice presidents.

"We have a good team here at Bowling Green, and I feel very supported from the top down."

Krebs, a 1978 BG graduate, also said he was not bothered by the announcement delay.

"Everybody wants to be appreciated," Krebs said. "One of the ways that manifests itself is in a contract extension, so I feel good about that. I feel appreciated."
