Falcons notebook: Looks can be deceiving on BGSU sideline
11/6/2005KENT, Ohio - The Omar Jacobs ruse was on.
Before Bowling Green State University's game against Kent State yesterday, Jacobs had pads on and warmed up about the same amount of time as redshirt freshman Anthony Turner.
But when the Falcons ran out for the start of the game, Jacobs had taken off his pads. Afterwards BG coach Gregg Brandon said Jacobs could not have played. As for his status in the Nov. 15 game against Miami, it's a "maybe," Brandon said.
"It's a day-to-day thing, I'm not making it up," Brandon said. "Could he play tomorrow? Maybe. Could he play the next day? Maybe. I don't know."
Kent State coach Doug Martin said he prepared his team for both quarterbacks, but once Turner left the game with an injury and then returned, there wasn't as big a difference between the two. Turner rushed the ball just twice after he returned late in the second quarter from an injury to his left side suffered earlier in the quarter.
"To be honest with you, it would have been easier, scheme-wise, if Omar had played, because we knew he wouldn't run the ball with a banged-up shoulder. It would pretty much just be a passing game," Martin said. "[Turner] is a threat to run, and that makes it more difficult because it opens up more things. Then once [Turner] got banged up, we were able to kind of get the same thing going."
PASSING IT AROUND: Four players threw a pass for BG yesterday: Turner, his brief replacement Van Johnson, and receivers Steve Sanders and Corey Partridge.
The longest completion of the game was by the player throwing his first career pass - Partridge, a quarterback as a high school senior. In the fourth quarter Partridge caught what appeared to be a screen pass from Turner but then heaved it downfield to P.J. Pope for a 36-yard gain to the Kent State 12.
"It took me back to high school days," Partridge said. "It was a lot of fun to get to do something different to help the team."
Partridge said his trick play was originally called on the play in the second quarter when Sanders attempted a pass to Charles Sharon in the end zone, but it was changed at the last second.
"I've got a little something to hold over [Sanders'] head now," Partridge said, jokingly.
PERRY MIA: BG's regular starter at strong safety, sophomore Deaudre Perry, did not make the trip. Brandon said Perry was "having some personal issues."
Sophomore Loren Hargrove got the start in his place and had three tackles.
EXTRA POINTS: Senior Joe Timchenko made his first field goal of the season, a 27-yarder in the second quarter. He also missed one from 30 yards. ... With three receptions yesterday, Sharon tied Cole Magner for most career catches at BG with 215. ... Junior Terrel White was in on two sacks yesterday, his first two of the season. ... Senior Teddy Piepkow had the first forced fumble of his career, and Jelani Jordan had his first of the season. Redshirt freshman John Haneline had his first career interception.
