BOWLING GREEN - Ali Mann scored the 1,000th point of her career as Bowling Green State University rolled over Akron 71-54 yesterday in a women's basketball game.

Mann became the 19th woman in BGSU history to score 1,000 points. She is the sixth to accomplish the feat in her junior year.

Mann led Bowling Green (10-2) with 25 points and nine rebounds. Kate Achter added 11 points and four assists, and Megan Thorburn also had 11 points.

It was the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.

Freshman Niki McCoy (Northview) led Akron (3-9) with 14 points and 12 rebounds. She also had eight of the Zips' 27 turnovers.

"We're happy to get away with a win, and start conference play at 1-0," BG coach Curt Miller said. "Like I've said many times, when the nonconference season is over, it doesn't matter what kind of nonconference record you have. It starts all over again. I'm proud that we did not overlook Akron."

Mann reached the 1,000-point mark by making two free throws with 3.5 seconds left before halftime.

"I can't be more proud of Ali Mann for getting her thousandth point in the first half," Miller said. "It's a great accomplishment, especially for midway through her junior year."
