Brandon tabs alum as assistant coach

6/30/2006

BOWLING GREEN Coach Gregg Brandon has filled the opening on his coaching staff at Bowling Green State University, hiring John Hunter of Pershing High School in Detroit to be his running backs coach.

Hunter played football for BGSU, starting four years at linebacker from 1984-87.

He was twice named All-Mid-American Conference and was part of the 1985

MAC Championship team.

At Pershing, his team made the state playoffs four of his six years as head coach.

Because of his experiences here at Bowling Green, he can sell the program

as well as anyone, Brandon said. He has been a part of some outstanding

teams as both a player and as a coach and he knows the qualities it takes to bring

out the best in others.

Hunter s arrival prompted Brandon to shake up some of the assistant coaches

position assignments. Dennis Springer will now coach defensive backs, D.J. Durkin

will coach linebackers and Mike Ward will coach the defensive line.

We are always looking for ways to improve and energize ourselves and this

is a great opportunity to do that, Brandon said.
