BOWLING GREEN - It was not exceptionally warm, in fact a cool breeze welcomed the Bowling Green State University football team on its first evening of official practice.

What could one possibly complain about?

"We need to get out of our underwear and put some shoulder pads on," coach Gregg Brandon said.

By underwear, Brandon of course was referring to shorts. Those will be replaced by pads starting Friday, at which time Brandon and his staff can get a more thorough look at what kind of team they have. But that's not to say they don't already have a good idea. Sixteen starters return from a team that played in a bowl game, so there's certainly reason for optimism heading into a new season. There also doesn't project to be lingering questions throughout August. Camp is void of a quarterback battle and the rest of the starting lineup is mostly set as well, although the pecking order elsewhere on the depth chart could be intense.

One development worth watching is Anthony Turner being moved to receiver. Turner, who has played at every offensive position except for the line, practiced with the second team yesterday at the inside position referred to as "E." Given Turner's speed and versatility, Brandon wasn't willing to waste him as a reserve running back.

"I think he's going to be an outstanding receiver for us," Brandon said. "He blended in there perfectly today. I'm excited to see him operate at that slot position."

CHEERING ON: Tyler Sheehan and back-up quarterback Andrew Beam took turns running the first team offense, although Sheehan is considered the starter.

Beam, a junior college implant, looked good. With a throwing delivery that nearly mirrors Sheehan's, Beam completed several passes to which he was applauded by Sheehan who shared in a couple of fist-pounds with his new teammate. Sheehan said recently that he and Beam have formed a bond.

"He's a great guy," Sheehan said. "He's trying to absorb my mind as much as he can. He's asking questions about the offense, what I see, what I look for. He seems like he could be as good as he wants to be."

NIGHT OWLS: Brandon said practices are being held in the evening this week because of a conflict with class schedules. Yesterday's practice went from 6-8:40 p.m.

That schedule will remain the same until Friday when practice will go from 4-6:45 p.m.
