BOWLING GREEN – Bowling Green State University quarterback Matt Schilz will not play Saturday at Michigan.

Schilz suffered a right shoulder sprain in the third quarter of BG's win over Marshall.

“He's going to be out this week,” BG coach Dave Clawson said. “He will not play against Michigan, and at this point we're ‘wait and see' as to when we'll get him back.

“We'd love to have him back for Buffalo [on Oct. 2], but for right now it's a day-to-day issue.”

Clawson said the starter for Saturday's contest hasn't been determined, with sophomore Aaron Pankratz – who played in the fourth quarter against Marshall – and true freshman Trent Hurley.

“This year, a clear No. 2 never really emerged,” Clawson said. “I said at the end of pre-season that the issue wasn't, ‘Who is our starter?' It is ‘Who is our back-up?' Really it was between Trent and Aaron.

“We've been giving both reps with the No. 1 offense this week, and we've told them that they are competing for the starter's job.”

Clawson said he wasn't sure when he and the coaching staff would decide on a starter.

“I don't know if it's fair to the quarterbacks to tell them Friday night,” Clawson said. “But I've always said you don't make a decision just for the convenience of having the decision made.

“We're not in a rush to make a bad decision.”
