For the past three weeks, coach Dave Clawson has had to field the same question repeatedly: “Who will be the Falcons' starting quarterback?”
While the question hasn't changed, the answer certainly has.
Before the Michigan game the Falcons knew injured starter Matt Schilz couldn't go, so Aaron Pankratz started in his place. Last week BG thought Schilz would be ready for Buffalo; Schilz's injury didn't heal sufficiently, though, which gave Pankratz a second chance.
This week at Ohio this important question may have a different answer. One reason is that Schilz may return to the starting lineup; if he's healthy, he's almost certain to start.
But if Schilz continues to be plagued by shoulder problems, don't be surprised if true freshman Trent Hurley gets the start.
One reason is that Pankratz struggled against Buffalo, completing just 12-of-37 pass attempts for 167 yards with three interceptions. Another is that Clawson said Hurley has continued to progress and improve in the past few weeks, primarily because the injury to Schilz has given Hurley more reps with the first-team offense.
But what about redshirting Hurley? “What about the seniors on this team?” Clawson responded. “It's not fair to the seniors on this team to factor that in. If a guy you'd like to redshirt gives you the best chance to win, you have to play him.”
