After watching his team get pounded by Kent State last Saturday, BGSU coach Dave Clawson ended his press conference with an interesting thought.

“I'm very excited about how good this football team is going to be,” he said. “You watch [this game], and you think [it's going to take time]. It's not going to take long.”

Many Falcon fans probably did a double-take when they read that. BG never really challenged a Kent State team that entered the game with a 2-4 record.

Yes, it's hard to find positives when the Falcons are 1-7, haven't won a MAC game in four tries, and don't have any automatic wins left on the schedule.

But if there ever was a time for Falcons fans to stay positive, now is that time.

The injuries that have gutted the offensive line and defensive backfield have ruined whatever chance this team had for success, exposing the inexperience and lack of depth throughout the program

To win again it will take a solid recruiting class next February. It will take continued development by young players such as Matt Schilz, Dwayne Woods, and Boo Boo Gates, three of the players who have shown glimpses of star potential. And it will take other players stepping forward to become productive.

But if those things come together, there is one thing it may not take: time.
