BG women thump Creighton

BOWLING GREEN – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team lost to one of the worst teams in the Missouri Valley Conference last Friday night.

Monday night the Falcons used that loss as motivation to beat one of the MVC's better squads, outscoring Creighton 49-23 in the second half to claim a 79-53 victory at Anderson Arena.

“I thought Evansville was a wake-up call for us,” said BG guard Tracy Pontius, who finished with 20 points. “We realized we had to get our stuff together, and that things wouldn't be easy for us. Night-in and night-out we had to work harder.

“I thought that started in practice. We got after it there and things became more intense.”

Lauren Prochaska finished with a game-high 21 points for Bowling Green, which evened its record at 1-1. The standout senior also had seven rebounds, but her biggest contribution was on defense as she held Creighton's Sam Schuett, an All-MVC first team pick last season, to just two points in 27 foul-plagued minutes.

“She just stopped a player that has received the same accolades that she is getting,” BG coach Curt Miller said of Prochaska. “Lauren held her to no field goals.

“Because of that match-up, it forced us to put our power forwards on their guards, and our post players took that challenge.”
