The Bowling Green football program is on the verge of a milestone. And it's little more than a blip on the radar screen.

"I would doubt many guys know how many wins we have in our history," said quarterback Matt Schilz, who did know that the team's win Saturday against Rhode Island was the 499th in program history. "It would be huge for Bowling Green to get its 500th win."

Coach Dave Clawson knows that milestones can get lost in the day-to-day grind of trying to win a game. "I was the head coach when Fordham won its 700th game," he said. "When I was asked if that was a big deal, I had to admit that I was the coach when Fordham lost its 500th game, too."

Yes, winning that 500th game won't bring the Falcons a Mid-American Conference title or bowl bid. But it does give a program with 10 MAC titles and six bowl bids an opportunity to honor its rich history and tradition as it becomes just the sixth league school to reach the 500-win plateau.

"That [win total] is a credit to all of the players and coaches who have been here," Clawson said. "Hopefully a by-product of our play on Saturday is that we will acknowledge that it's win No. 500. But we've got a lot of work to do before that happens."
