Falcons’ rally falls short on road at No. 11 Irish

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Bowling Green hockey team suffered a 4-3 loss to Notre Dame in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game Friday.

The Falcons (13-17-5 overall, 10-14-3-1 CCHA) battled from 3-0 and 4-1 deficits but never were able to tie the game against the 11th-ranked Fighting Irish (20-12-3, 16-8-3-2).

Notre Dame’s Eric Johnson scored the only goal of the first period at the 8:41 mark.

The Fighting Irish scored twice in the first five minutes of the second.

T.J. Tynan scored a power-play goal at 2:05 and Jeff Costello added an even-strength goal at 5:19 to chase BG goalie Tommy Burke, who was replaced by Andrew Hammond.

Just 50 seconds later the Falcons got a power-play goal from Ben Murphy.

Notre Dame regained its three-goal advantage with Mario Lucia scored a power-play goal at 7:24.

Bowling Green scored twice in a one-minute span to cut the deficit to a single goal. Brent Tate scored a power-play goal at 15:24, and at 16:25 Brett Mohler collected his sixth goal of the season.

Burke finished with eight saves, while Hammond had 13. Notre Dame’s Steven Summerhays stopped 32 shots.
