Irish edge Falcons in Game 1
3/16/2013SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Bryan Rust scored just 1:22 into overtime to give Notre Dame a 1-0 victory Friday over Bowling Green in the first game of a best-of-three Central Collegiate Hockey Association second-round playoff series.
The teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today at the Compton Family Events Center. If Bowling Green wins, a decisive game will be Sunday.
BG goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 35 shots, making several impressive stops along the way, while Notre Dame’s Steven Summerhays finished with 22 saves.
4 Falcons on CCHA All-Time Team
BOWLING GREEN — Four former Bowling Green players were named to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s All-Time Team announced Friday.
George McPhee was one of three forwards named to the first team, while forward Nelson Emerson, defenseman Ken Morrow and goaltender Mike Luit were chosen to the second team.
McPhee scored 114 goals and had 267 points in his career from 1978-82, winning the 1982 Hobey Baker Award — college hockey’s top award — the CCHA’s first winner of that honor.
Emerson, who played at BG from 1986-90, is the CCHA’s all-time leading scorer with 178 goals and 294 career points.
Morrow played for the Falcons from 1975-79, and in 154 career games had 34 goals, 92 assists and 126 points. He also played on the 1980 U.S. Olympic team which won a gold medal.
Liut, who played at BG from 1973-77, had a 53-27-1 career record with the Falcons as well as a 3.35 goals-against average and a 88.8 save percentage.
The CCHA All-Time first team also has Michigan State’s Kip Miller and Brandan Morrison of Michigan at forwards; Wayne Gagne of Western Michigan and Andy Greene of Miami on defense and Ryan Miller of Michigan State in goal.
The second team has Lake Superior’s Jim Dowd and Bill Joyce of Northern Michigan at forward; and John-Michael Liles of Michigan.
