BGSU knocked out of CCHA tourney


SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame scored twice midway through the third period, then hung on to beat Bowling Green 4-3 Saturday in the second game of a best-of-three Central Collegiate Hockey Association second-round playoff series.

Bryan Rust scored on a penalty shot at 8:28 of the final period to break a 2-2 tie as the Fighting Irish swept the series.

Notre Dame (22-12-3) advances to the semifinals of the CCHA playoffs next Saturday at Joe Louis Arena.

Bowling Green ends its season at 15-21-5.

The Fighting Irish scored twice in the first period, getting a power-play goal by Rust at 6:44 while Nick Larson knocked home a rebound at 12:45.

The Falcons used the power play to climb back into the game in the second period.

Bryce Williams scored with the extra man at 6:33, BG’s first goal of the series, and Ben Murphy tied the game at 2-2 when he redirected a shot from the point by Ralfs Freibergs past Notre Dame goalie Steven Summerhays at 18:42.

In the third period a Bowling Green player covered up the puck in the crease, leading to Rust’s penalty-shot tally.

The Irish got a power-play goal by Anders Lee at 12:05, but Williamson scored his second goal of the game 13 seconds later to cut the deficit to a single goal.

The Falcons couldn’t find the equalizer in the program’s final CCHA game.

Bowling Green’s Andrew Hammond stopped 30 shots, while Summerhays was credited with 29 saves.
