  • Perrysburg’s Sarah Baer has announced that she will sign a national letter of intent to join the Falcons for the 2014-15 season.
Perrysburg’s Sarah Baer has announced that she will sign a national letter of intent to join the Falcons for the 2014-15 season.

BOWLING GREEN — The Bowling Green State University women’s basketball team has received three verbal commitments for next year — including a pair of players from the Falcons’ backyard.

Perrysburg’s Sarah Baer has announced that she will sign a national letter of intent to join the Falcons for the 2014-15 season, as has Liberty-Benton’s Rachel Myers. The third commitment is from Lauren Webb of Vernon Hills High School of Vernon Hills, Ill.

BG coach Jennifer Roos cannot comment on potential recruits until they sign a national letter of intent, which is expected to take place in November.

For Baer, a 6-1 center, the decision to commit to Bowling Green was a dream come true.

“I love that Bowling Green is only 10 minutes away — I have always wanted to go there,” she said. “My parents went to Bowling Green, and my older sister goes there.”

As a junior Baer, averaged 13.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game in leading the Yellow Jackets to a 23-2 record. Perrysburg finished the season ranked No. 8 in Division I and won both sectional and district titles before losing in the regional semifinals.

Baer was named to the All-Northern Lakes League team, was first team all-district, and second team All-Ohio, and earned a berth on the All-Blade team.

“Her best attribute is her athleticism,” Perrysburg coach Todd Sims said. “She can run the floor, she can jump, and she is very active.

“Plus, she’s a very positive person and hard worker who comes from a great family.”

The 5-7 Myers verbally committed to the Falcons in January, then led Liberty-Benton High School to a 19-5 record and Division III sectional and district titles before losing to Archbold in the regional semifinals.

She averaged 15.6 points per game last season to earn All-Ohio second team honors as a junior.

Webb recently announced her commitment to the Falcons after averaging 13.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per game last season for Vernon Hills.

Despite standing 6-1, Webb played point guard for the Cougars this season.

Webb helped lead Vernon Hills to the Class 3A state title game for the second straight season.

“It wasn’t my intention to make her the point guard last season, but she really took to it and ran with it,” Vernon Hills coach Paul Brettner said.

“She is very versatile. She can shoot the 3, play with her back to the basket — fill any hole Bowling Green has.”

Webb said she chose BGSU for a variety of reasons.

“The most important reason was the coaching staff,” she said. “I love Jennifer Roos and [assistant coach] Jesse Fleming, and it has been exciting to meet the new assistant coaches. It’s just an amazing staff.

“I like a bigger school. And I like that at Bowling Green I can play all over the court. Even though I will probably be one of the ‘bigs,’ I can get a chance to play on the wing. I love playing all over the court.”
