Assistant football coach returns to BGSU

BOWLING GREEN -- Bowling Green State University assistant football coach Bill Durkin has returned to the program, the school announced today.

Durkin was put on an unpaid administrative leave for seven days after he was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence and then received a subsequent citation in an unrelated incident for driving with a suspended license. Both incidents occurred on Aug. 24.

Durkin did not coach the team in its first two games this season.

According to a university statement, Durkin has agreed to termination of his contract for any additional criminal violations for alcohol or drug use. The school will make Durkin provide documentation that he is permitted by the state to operate a motor vehicle in connection with his coaching duties, and he will not be allowed to have more than six points on his driving record over a rolling three-year period.

Further, Durkin must make two presentations on alcohol and drug awareness to student-athletes and athletic department staff.

In addition, Durkin’s salary will be frozen for the next year. He is ineligible for a raise or any bonuses.

The release says BGSU will have no further comment on this disciplinary matter.

Durkin is scheduled to appear in Bowling Green Municipal Court on Friday.
