■ Notes: The Falcons open the season against the Wolverines at the Iona Tip-Off Tournament in New Rochelle, N.Y., followed by a game between Arizona and host Iona. Depending on the result of today’s contests, BG will play either Arizona or Iona on Saturday. … Michigan returns just three letter-winners and one starter from last season. … In the Wolverines’ 81-55 exhibition win against Wayne State, junior guard Shannon Smith led the team in scoring with 22 points. … UM has won the past two meetings of the two schools, and BG has not posted a victory in the series since 1991. … Arizona returns nine letter-winners and four starters from last season. … Junior guard Candice Warthen, who missed last season because of injury, scored 23 points in an exhibition win over Fort Lewis. … Iona welcomes back eight letterwinners, including all five starters, from a WNIT team last season. … Junior guard Damika Martinez averaged 18.1 ppg last season and is the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason player of the year, while sophomore forward Joy Adams joined Martinez on the preseason All-MAAC team. … Last season the Falcons finished third in their only in-season tournament, losing to Villanova before beating UNLV in the Lady Rebel Round-Up. … BG’s last in-season championship came in the Seattle Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 26-27, 2010. The Falcons beat Arkansas-Little Rock and the host school to win the title.
