Women of Vision dinner plans set

11/2/2000

A Night for Women of Vision Dinner Auction kickoff party was held Monday evening in the Eagle Point Colony home of Tom and Connie Schmidt - she was the event chairwoman. Guests mingled in the newly restored riverfront 1924 home, enjoying refreshments and a spectacular view of the outdoors from every room. Included in the soiree were Mike and Carol Anderson, Grace Weidaw, Louann Cummings, Jeff and Pat Kuhr, Joe and Bev Rideout, Richard and Marianne Herrick, Pam Shanks, John and Johanna Hull, Paul and Sheryl Favorite, and Len and Pat Bullard.

LEN AND JANE TUCKER were so happy with their new “Florida home” in Maumee they had an open house Oct. 22 for those who played a role during the construction. Construction crews and contractors toured the finished product, proudly stopping to point out this and that to their family.

The Tuckers saw a model home while vacationing at their Florida condominium and decided to duplicate it here, with a few changes. The spacious, open home has 12-foot ceilings, creamy carpet and tile, and lots of windows. A few highlights include a big kitchen, a walk-in closet off the bathroom with remote-control blinds, skylights, and a huge sunroom that leads to a deck.

THE LOCAL March of Dimes was busy last week raking in more than $10,000 with two fund-raisers. The Star Chefs Event last Monday featured gourmet delights at Navy Bistro by Northwest Ohio's leading chefs. Chefs seen included Chris Bates, J.D. Gensch, Bill Clark, Cecelio Balmoria, Mike Rosendaul, William Kolfhoff, John Wesley, Ed Smolenski, and Labib Hajjar.

Tuesday through Thursday was the annual Jail and Bail at the Food Town Plus store on Secor Road. Area citizens were arrested, convicted, and sentenced to spend one hour in the slammer, but they were allowed to make as many calls as necessary to raise bail in the form of donations. The top five jailbirds were Marcia Stager, Connie Schmidt, Joe Tafelski, Lindy Cook, and Charles Lafaso. The net was $34,000.

THE ENGLISH SPEAKING UNION 25th Anniversary Dinner was held Friday at Toledo Country Club. Guest speaker was Robert Culshaw, Her Majesty's Consul General in Chicago. Mr. Culshaw, who has also served in Washington, Athens, Rome, Khartoum, Muscat, Lebanon, and Jordan, speaks Arabic, Italian, Modern Greek, and French. He entertained the audience with his experiences as a diplomat with a touch of British humor.

THE SECOND ANNUAL Harvest of Thanks presented by Toledo-Northwestern Ohio Food Banks was last Wednesday at the Pinnacle. A special appearance by Ohio State University football legend Archie Griffin, the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner, was a highlight.
