Group members gather at spring events

The Toledo Mud Hens' new stadium has been the hot topic lately, but other events have also made good pitches.

The Toledo Association of Legal Assistants celebrated its silver anniversary April 11 at Sylvania Country Club. Thomas J. Moyer, chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, was guest speaker. President of the organization is Pam Boytim; the anniversary committee chairwoman was Gidget Di Reinz.

The Ability Center Auxiliary membership tea was April 10 in the home of Judy Kasper. Ladies sipped tea poured from silver service and nibbled petits fours, canapes, tea sandwiches, and delicious desserts.

Major supporters of the Toledo Opera were entertained by stars of The Turn of the Screw. Hosts of the April 9 soiree at Winfield's restaurant were Leisa Marino and Marina and Bruce Lung. Host of the April 10 party at the Toledo Club were Frank and Lynn Jacobs.

St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary's 34th annual “Women of Toledo” awards luncheon was April 9, opening day of the Mud Hens' new stadium. The event, named for the Grey Nuns, honored five area women for their pursuit of personal and professional excellence - Kay Clawson, Denise Colturi, Margarita De Leon, Melissa Voetsch, and Judy Weinberg. Event chairwoman was Lynne Mezinko.

The International Association of Administrative Professionals Glass City Chapter held a fashion show, “Style with a Roarrr,” April 6 at the Toledo Zoo's African Lodge for scholarship funds.

The Advertising Club of Toledo raised scholarship funds with an auction April 4 at Navy Bistro.

The Women of the Old West End were entertained April 6 in the home of Skip Gaynor and Judy Stone with a wine and cheese party that included prizes for the prettiest, most creative, ornate, elegant, and unusual wine glasses.

Tong Rafati celebrated his 50th birthday with friends April 7 at Our Place Restaurant, where he is part owner and chef. Some 100 guests joined the fun, which featured American and Korean foods.

Plans are under way for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Toledo's new fund-raiser, “Barefoot at the Beach,” slated for Aug. 24 at Maumee Bay State Park.

Chairmen Connie Schmidt and Brian Epstein met March 19 at Nick & Jimmy's with the committee to go over plans for the fun, casual, and barefoot event that will feature the Paradise Island band from Columbus. Honorary chairman is Toledo Fire Chief Michael Bell, with a host of committee chairmen, including Lori Hart, Jill McMullan, Andy Anderzack, Rick Mann, John Drumheller, Bob Napierala, and Barbara Floyd. Seemingly countless community volunteers are on board, too: Margaret Hedlund, Mary Krueger, Sara Moynihan, Gina Thompson, Lori Paton, Ben Brown, John Fedderke, and Julie Funk, to name a few.

St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary and Foundation's “A Night to Remember” will present Back with the Pack Sept. 14 in the Valentine Theatre. The event was announced at the kickoff luncheon March 19 in the home of chairman Kathi Glascock.

Back with the Pack features an impersonation team presenting reflections of the Rat Pack, which included Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin.

Invitations for Inverness Club's spring gala, “A Formal Affair,” on May 4 are in the mail. Committee members met March 12 at the club to prepare the mailing for the dinner dance for new members.

The kickoff for the inaugural Man and Woman of the Year campaign to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society was March 22 in the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library. A fund-raising competition among business and community leaders will be judged on the basis of time and talents donated. Guests at the kickoff met the boy and girl of the year - Sarah Cummerow and Robbie Hovland, two local children battling a blood-related cancer.

The campaign ends May 11, when the man and woman of the year will be announced.
