Ribs contest raises $10,000 for charity

Volunteer chefs gathered for “The Big Rib Off” recently in the Perrysburg home of Michael Servoss. The event, presented by Anesthesiology Consultants of Toledo, benefits the Charity Care Fund of Toledo Hospital, Toledo Children's Hospital, and Flower Hospital.

Several chefs whipped up their favorite sauce for a ribs contest, with awards from judges and people's choice prizes.

With a secret ingredient, Pete's Doctored Ribs, by Pete Wilson's team, was the grand-slam winner. Another catchy sauce name was Just What the Doctor Ordered by chef Greg Rufty. Lee Tibbetts, Chuck Metz, and Dr. Servoss also participated.

Diane and Michael Servoss hosted `The Big Rib Off' to benefit the Charity Care Fund of Toledo and Flower hospitals.

Proceeds were close to $10,000, according to Yvette Normand, who coordinated the event. There was such a great response, with 300 to 400 guests - even though no formal invitations were sent - that the committee is considering doing it again next year.

Also seen were Kevin and Janice Lodge, Ashtras Banoub, Shannon and Bill Gallup, Bill and Holly James, Bob Engelhart, and Stan and Stephanie Matos.

THE MAUMEE SUMMER FAIR last weekend was a relaxing time. Friends and neighbors strolled the main streets of the city's downtown, eating ice cream cones, tasting vendors' foods, shopping at crafts booths, oohing at the cars and trucks in the classic show, and “awwwing” over pets at the Lend-A-Paw booth.

Skoobie Snaks, the Mighty Meaty Swing Kings, Dry Bones Revival, Moore's Law, and Stacked Ham bands played throughout the weekend.

In addition, A Taste of Maumee featured food booths staffed by local restaurants, including Hops, Gourmet of China, Carrabba's, Bankok Kitchen, Longhorn, El Salto, Marco's, Red Lobster, Fricker's, Gianno's Italian Bistro, and Max and Erma's.

A PIG ROAST for Spring Meadows Extended Care Facility was Friday on the front lawn. There was a tropical buffet, music by the Cake Walkin' Jass Band, and clowns and children's games.

Among the 300 guests were Mike Yunker, the mayor of Holland, and his wife, Annie, and Paula and Stan Bowers of Tiffin.

JAN CLARK MONK was honored at an Aloha party last Thursday in the International Institute - guests wore Hawaiian-style clothes. Ms. Monk is retiring after 15 years of service at the institute.

TIM AND HALEY Schmucker are bidding adieu to Toledo and leaving early next week for Tampa, Fla. Friends said good-bye during a recent party, with decorations of flamingos, sand, pelicans, and fishnets, at the home of Terri and Phil Johnson at their outdoor pool.

THE GOAL POST GALA was a rousing success! The event Aug. 9 at the Sunrise Park and Banquet Center was held to raise funds for the relocation of the Genoa High School football field, and the net profit was $23,000, said chairman Marty Sutter.

The semiformal event was also a lot of fun, with a silent auction, grazing stations, dancing, a reverse raffle, and live entertainment by the Motown Group.

A golf outing was held in the morning at Oak Harbor Golf Club.

GERRY HUDICK, retired society maven for the West Toledo Herald, is still in the know. Mrs. Hudick moved to Dublin, Ohio, a few years ago to be with her daughter and granddaughters, but still keeps in touch with Toledo area folks who miss her “Meanderings with Gerry” column.

The spry 93-year-old has spunk. She now has her own column in the Tuttle Tales community newsletter for the Sanctuary at Tuttle Crossing, where she resides. She also appears occasionally on a local radio show.

To top it off, Gerry, who is noted for her hats, was hostess for a tea party where guests wore their best chapeaux. While Mrs. Hudick no longer plays in the sun, she recalls her days at Put-in-Bay and Lakeside with her family, who enjoyed boating. Her best memories are of the refreshing, sparkling water.
