Symphony League brunch honors its standout volunteers

The Crescendos of the Toledo Symphony League were honored at a brunch Monday in the Sylvania home of Margaret Danziger, with the assistance of Kathryn Fell and Gretchen Gehring. These members are volunteers who have given outstanding support to the league.

Newly inducted members are Pam Bettinger, Marlene Garbe, Carol Mohler, and Judy Maurer. Among the longtime members present were Mary Pat Anderson, Betty McKinney, Carol Geracioti, June Roshe, Margaret Doresco, Mary Madigan, Jean Smith, and Diane Breese. Members also seen were Druscilla Griffin, Dortha Baum, Equilla Roach, Marlene Uhler, Faye Fenwick, Jan Cole, June Sloan, and president Bev Zielinski.

THE UNIVERSITY of Toledo Rockets scored big for the American Cancer Society. The weather was wet and cold, but the Rockets came through and made the American Cancer Society Relay for Life a huge success with $29,500 net. The event, run by students, took place nonstop from 5 p.m. Friday until 11 a.m. the next day with games, food, entertainment, and a "team" effort to cure cancer.

Sara Foos of the American Cancer Society said, "Never once was it brought up to end the relay early" because of the inclement weather.

A SOIREE at Inverness Club welcomed several new members on Oct. 5. New members in attendance included Mitchell Greenbaum and Marie Morelli, Ken Greene, Art and Lori Hanrehan, Rod and Jane Hoyng, Michael Hyland, Chris Prisby, Ed Ruszkiewicz, Mark Seal and Eleanore Awadalla, Sharon Simmons and Ron Coffman, and Lamont and Heather Thurston.

Greeting the new group were staff, board members, and sponsors. The club has welcomed 49 new members in the last 11 months.

THE HURRICANE VICTIM FUND received the $3,000 from the second annual Jim Woodard Memorial Golf Tournament Sept. 30 at Whiteford Valley Golf Club. That's partly thanks to first-place winners Jim Teachout, Nelson Snellenberger, and Glenn Bigley, who donated their $500 cash prize back to the cause.

HAROLD JAFFE Jeweler's Superior Survivor Award was presented recently to Mary Greeno, breast cancer survivor, for her work with the Promise Quilts, a grass-roots project that creates an annual handmade quilt to benefit the Northwest Ohio Affiliate of the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. To date, the Promise Quilts have raised more than $95,500.

Ms. Greeno received a custom-designed pin from Jeff Jaffe.

THE TOLEDO Ski Club's annual October fest Oct. 16 also sufficed as the semi-annual meeting. The club touts it is the "best little secret" in town since it has something for everyone.

Members enjoy skiing, of course, both downhill and cross country, but also snow boarding, boating, bike riding, wind surfing, golf, scuba diving, ice skating, roller blading, white-water rafting, tennis, and volleyball. A new group is also forming to learn the art of curling.

Offering family and single memberhips, the club has members from age 2 to 82 from all walks of life.

Also noted for great parties, the TSC Halloween party is slated for Oct. 29 at the TSC Clubhaus, followed by the Annual Swap Shop on Nov. 7 at St. Clement Hall, the Ohio State- Michigan Chili Cook-off Nov. 20 at the Clubhaus, the Christmas Party Dec. 17 at Brandywine Country Club, and parties at the TSC Lodge in Boyne Mountain.
