Summer birthdays, anniversaries take the cake

8/16/2007

Summer fun is sprinkled with special occasions, but birthdays and anniversaries are the frosting on the cake, so to speak. While there are too many to mention all of them, here are a few that people are still talking about.

SURPRISE! Jeff Huskisson hosted a surprise party July 21 for his sweetheart of 19 years, Laurie, in honor of her 50th birthday. The bash was at Belmont Country Club on the veranda with music and dancing, lots of hors d oeuvres and an open bar.

Nearly 80 family and friends were in attendance at the celebration orchestrated by Mrs. Huskisson s close friend, Randy Schnee.

Among the family present were Mrs. Huskisson s mother, Jean, and father, Jerry Melchior, brother Mark Melchior, and his wife, Lynn, and niece, Rachael Melchior.

Mr. Huskisson s mother, Jean Huskisson, and two sisters Dee and Ron Rinna and Debbie Shaw were there too.

Friends included John and Kim Bringman, Tim and Cindy Anderson, Nancy and John Kevern, Cindy and Jack Sculfort, Gerry and Tom Kull, Laura and Mark Hummer, Brenda and Bill Irwin, Debbie and Jesse Walle, Mike and Nancy Kumor, April and Ron King, Molly and Bob Mack, Kristi and Keith Tammarine, Trish and Greg Forester, Jeff Bunkers, and Dale and Serena Barnard.

IT WAS like a family reunion for Lance and Dee Talmage July 13th at Inverness Club. The party was in honor of their wedding, 45 years ago, at Glenwood Lutheran Church in Toledo on June 23, 1962. About 75 family, members of the wedding party, friends from high school, college, and community members attended the reception, which included a replicated wedding cake and flowers, and sapphire ribbons, the 45th anniversary color.

After the heart-warming evening hosted by the Talmage children, the family headed to their Devils Lake cottage for the weekend.

The Talmage children are Tammy Talmage, Tenley and Paul Granito and their children, Paul Thomas, Laney, Rosie, and Henry, and Lance and Monica Talmage and their children Lance III and Lexi.

ELIZABETH Zepf, who co-founded Zepf Center with her husband, Arthur, now deceased, celebrated her 104th birthday again and again and again. Her actual birthday is July 6, which is when she celebrated with her son Arthur Zepf, Jr., but she didn t stop there. The witty and charming lady, who is always impeccably dressed, was the honoree at more than a half dozen celebrations last month.

Among the fun gatherings was one at Bay Shore Supper Club with Kay and Fred Flack and her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Joe Rychnowsky, several of the Flack family clan from Virginia, plus friends, including Jane Larsen.

Another lunch that month was a party by the Toledo Council of Catholic Women at Red Lobster on Reynolds Road. The group honored their fellow member, Mrs. Zepf, who has been a board member since the 1950s. She was local president and national president in 1960, when President Kennedy was elected, and the whole national board had breakfast at the White House.

Among the Ohio group who came from near and far were president Jan Hazen of Fremont, Toledoans K. Laverne Reddin, Betty Beham, and Kay Flack of Toledo, Lorainne Henry and Peg Logsdon of Findlay, Audrey Englehart of Marblehead, Marguerite Boes of Alvada, Fran Baumle of Payne, Chris Young of New Washington, Nancy Kimmet of New Riegel, Theda Bergefurd of Gibsonburg, Gert Knueven of Leipsic, Kate Wischmeyer and Francis Salsburey of Ottawa, and the group s moderator, the Rev. James Brown of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Another delightful party was at the home of Ed and Mary Gray s with their daughter Mary and other friends. The lovely lunch was all homemade goodies by the senior Mrs. Gray.
