    • Welcome to 2008. On the eve of the new year Monday night there were plenty of parties, from casual gatherings to formal affairs.

    MOST of the country clubs had an early dinner and were closed well before midnight.

    However, Brandywine Country Club members celebrated the coming of the new year together with a lobster and filet dinner. The meal was topped with a fancy dessert for the partygoers, who were all dressed to the nines. Starting the evening off was music by the Jerry DePrisco Jazz Group during cocktails and dinner, then a DJ played for dancing for the more than 200 revelers, including the 50 or so who came just for dinner. Champagne toasts kissed the old year farewell and the new year, hello.

    THE Toledo Club hosted a celebration for roughly 140 members and guests, which was contrary to the big bashes of previous years. It was a nice affair. Celebrants sipped cocktails in the Red Room, then retired to the dining room of the stately club, which was all a glitter, for a surf and turf dinner. The evening ended with dancing to the Nite Hawks band and a toast to the new year as balloons cascaded from the ceiling.

    Among the partygoers in tuxedos or cocktail dresses, gowns, and fur coats were Barbara Baker, who just returned from a trip to England, and Ann Baronas and hubby Bill Jonke, who just returned from a vacation in Hawaii.

    Also seen were Lee and Jim Buerk, Cheryl and Ron Volk, Bob and Karen Lucas, Sherry and Greg Hendel, Kathy Carroll and her husband, Carl White, Diane and Tom Tousley, Brent and Pam Cousino, Marianne Ballas and Jim Maciejko, BJ and Frank Styles, Dottie and Phil Rice, Dee and Lance Talmage, and Joe and Ann Pilkington.

    A group of young professionals filled nearly half of the room. Seen were Brian Epstein, Jeremy Levy and Sarah Lamuth, and birthday gal Carrie Geiger and her fiance, Rob Kuhr. Her grandparents, Tom and Brenda Geiger, were dining on the other side of the room.

    NASR KHAN was the host for a party in his Perrysburg home for nearly 50 family and friends. After a tasty meal and lively conversation, everyone gathered to watch on television as the lighted ball dropped in New York's Times Square. Among the group were Claudia and Peter Handwork, Jackie and Dick Knepper, Lee Murray, Kathy and Jim Detweiler, Rosemary Dressel, Stepper and George LeBoutillier, and Angelo Gangas, who is celebrating his birthday - it was yesterday - all week.

    ANOTHER hot spot on New Year's Eve was Gladieux Meadows, which offered a great deal that included dinner and open bar, a Champagne toast, and dancing to Johnny Rocker and the Hit Men. Transportation to and from the Country Inn and Fairfield Inn also was offered.

    Other celebrations included the Shriners party at the Stranahan Great Hall. The Mansion View Inn hosted a party at the Civic Center Promenade. The Swingmania band played at the Clarion for a big bash, and Jeff McDonald said they had a great time playing for people who enjoy dancing. It was a full house at Rosie's Italian Grille, and Fusion Martini Bar downtown was busy, too.

    Meanwhile, some Toledo Ski Club members toasted the new year at the Ski Club lodge near Boyne City, Mich., while Florida snowbirds, including Jalna and Ken MacLaren, stayed put with friends in their Naples home. Patty and Dick Westmeyer and their family celebrated the new year in Harbor Springs, Mich.

    Here in Toledo, many folks dined out then headed home to bring in the new year, including John and Yolanda Szuch, who were at Georgio's.
