Toledo Yacht Club celebrates 100th anniversary in style
5/15/2008Toledo Yacht Club, founded in 1865, celebrated the current building's 100th anniversary Saturday night.
The building at Bayview Park, the fifth structure for the club, is on the National Register of Historic Places. It officially opened on May 2, 1908; however, the doors were opened to members on April 1 of that year. The building, with its Venetian/Renaissance architecture, overlooks the Maumee Bay and Lake Erie.
To celebrate, commodore David Kiel and his wife, Jan, were joined by several members Saturday night, including the TYC auxiliary, which presented a painting of the club building as it was in 1908 by long time auxiliary member Camilla Emerson. Plans are in the works to make 100 lithograph reprints of the painting, and proceeds from sales of these reprints will go toward the renovation projects, said Becky Moorman, auxiliary president.
WHAT better way to start Mother's Day than participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk at the Town Center at Levis Commons? The second annual event raised $75,000 for breast cancer research, thanks to more than 3,000 walkers.
Mrs. Ohio, Gerri Walczak of Perrysburg, who was crowned in March and is a breast cancer survivor, was there.
THE Toledo Ski Club's annual awards banquet was May 10 at the Fallen Timbers Condos party room. Peter Mainhardt chauffeured guests from the parking lot in Joni Schafer's golf cart. Inside, a specialty cake made by Frosted Fantasies complete with skiers, hills, and photos, was served for the more than 70 members and guests. Manning the grills were Ed Brown, Rick Popiolek, and Lynn Kossow.
President Ginger Safford presented awards to the board members. Mr. Popiolek, past president, presented the "Boot" award, a bronzed ski boot, to Marge Brechbill for her efforts to promote the club.
Many received racing awards, including Nick, Gino, and Barb Chiappetta, Tobey Cauffiel, Joe Connelly, and Debi Koltoniak. Vladimir Goldin was honored with first place in the NASTAR nationals in Steamboat, Colo.
Tricia Fee-Mainhardt, vice president, handed out comedy awards to Rick Weir, Kristen Emery, Dave Zirn, Lisa McClain, Beth Sturdevant, Paul Drayton, Larry Boesel, and others.
PAT WILSON of Tea, s'il vous plait, was the guest speaker May 7 at the Wolcott House Museum. "If Teacups Could Talk" was the perfect topic for the Mother's Day celebration tea.

THE kick-off party for the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic Merrill Lynch Gala Dinner was May 1 at Owens Corning World Headquarters.
The gala will be July 8 at the SeaGate Convention Centre, with Hootie and the Blowfish performing. There are a limited number of tickets remaining. Tickets are $225 each and include dinner and the show. The dinner is during the week of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic presented by Kroger.
This year's tournament general chairman is Steve Mickus of Mercy Health Partners. Michael Thaman of Owens Corning is chairman-elect.
THE kick-off for the 10th anniversary Valentine Theatre Gala was April 29 in the lovely Eagle Point Colony home of Kathie and Brad Delp.
The gala will be Sept. 20, with Grammy award winners Manhattan Transfer as the headline entertainment, event chairman Joan Bayer announced.
At the kick-off party, Mrs. Delp inspired ticket ambassadors to sell, sell, sell, when she said, "Every great society values the arts. Let us be a great society." Tickets are going like hotcakes, said Dale Vivirito, the theater's executive director. The $250-per-person gala ticket includes a goodie bag, open bar, and the entertainment, followed by dinner and dancing.
The theater opened on Christmas Day, 1895, and was reopened after renovations in September, 1999, so this year's gala is getting a head start on the anniversary decade.
A JAZZY night was the Hats Off to Jazz party April 21 at Harold Jaffe Jewelers, the perfect spot because the late Harold and Shirley Jaffe were jazz buffs. The event was the kick-off for the 2008 Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Festival presented by the Toledo Jazz Society June 13-15 at Promenade Park.
Springfield High School's Sax Attack greeted guests at the entrance. Songbird Kelly Broadway and pianist Jim Gottron performed cool numbers along with jazz star Jon Hendricks.
A dozen hats designed by folks from the creative community were sold to the highest bidders with the help of auctioneer Jerry Anderson of WTOL-TV, Channel 11.
Frank Fountain, head of the Chrysler Foundation, which is giving a $100,000 sponsorship to the festival for the fourth year, won the bidding for a hat created by Cynthia Ford.
Jeff Jaffe, festival chairman and vice president of the Toledo Jazz Society, won the bid on a hat, quilted by Sheri Luedtke, which details the history of jazz in Toledo. Laurie Jaffe bought a dramatic jazz creation by Phil Hazard. Tom Waniewski bought "Cajun Feast," created by New Orleans native Shelley Brown. "Art Tatum's Keys" by Condessa Croninger and "A Feather in Your Jazz" by Joni Gordon went to Alan and Barbara Konop. Mike Cicak won the bid for "Drummin," a drum-crowned hat designed by Edith Franklin and Keith Bernhard. Mary Weiss's "Home Run" hat was bought by Dick Greenblatt, president of the jazz society. A jazzy beret by Kimberly Arden went to Belinda Bernhard. Terri Schwartz won the bid for "Buttoned Jazz" by Joni Gordon. Eric Hillenbrand won the bid for "Charmed by Jazz," a sparkling black hat crowned with jazz charms created by Michelle Jaffe.
The event netted $4,000.
TONIGHT from 5 to 9 p.m., Honey I'm Home, located near Westfield Franklin Park mall, is hosting a benefit to support Toledo Choose Local business owners. Ten percent of sales during the evening will help support the organization. Tonight also is the re-opening of Real Seafood after its week off for renovations.
