Flag Day and a hit movie give Toledoans reason to party

6/19/2008

Toledoans are generous when it comes to charity, but sometimes it's nice just to have a party.

A GREAT excuse for a party was Flag Day on Saturday. It was celebrated with flying colors at a Fly Your Flag Fling at the Corey Road home of Steve Scarvelis and Raquel Bravo. More than 35 guests, most sporting red, white, and blue plus a few flag colors from around the world, mingled on the patio nestled among trees and gardens enhanced with American flags and twinkle lights.

It was make your own Greek/Mexican kabobs for dinner, with all kinds of tasty side dishes and a giant American flag cake with white frosting, red raspberries, and blueberries. U.S. wines, German and Mexican beers, and Raquel's homemade sangria quenched thirsts.

Enjoying the perfect weather and tranquil setting were Duane and Maria Winter, Jim Moore and Tim Valko, Mary and Tom Zraik, Dick and Jacquie McIntyre, Lisa and Bob McPherson, Mary Dawson, Jim and Jennifer Payette, Rose and Bob Price, and many others, including Mr. Scarvelis' sister and brother-in-law, Jalna and Ken MacLaren, and brother and sister-in-law, George and Elaine Scarvelis.

Ken and Sue Kreuz entertained friends with the stories of their trip to Hong Kong.

A BIT of the big city life was here in Toledo:

A SEX and the City night called "Cosmos and Cupcakes" was June 12 at Ragazza dress shop in Perrysburg, hosted by owner Jane Wurth.

Drinks, snacks, cupcakes and some retail therapy started the evening, then nearly 30 ladies - looking as if they came from New York - headed to Levis Commons to see the hit chick flick.

Whether it was Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, or Charlotte, many dressed as their favorite character from the TV series and the movie. Sky-high heels were popular, along with sexy dresses and skirts, jewelry, and make-up. Among the lovely ladies were Jenni Yoder, Susan Jamieson, Ann Moon, Chris Epstein, Barb Cutillo, Nancy Nart, Penny Marks, Gail Story, Jan Dolgin, Susan Lang, and Pati Boyle.

SASSY heels and chic city attire were part of the dress code for another Sex and the City party May 18 at The Blarney Irish Pub. It was a new twist in Toledo for a Sunday night. Martinis flowed and cupcakes were served along with pub grub for the more than 150 Sex and the City fans. A few episodes of the TV series were shown.

There was a look-a-like contest and trivia questions with prizes, including a Swank Martini Co. martini glass set and gift certificates from the Black and White Cab Co., Meig, Harold Jaffe Jewelers, and more, including personal training sessions and movie passes.

TICKETS still are available, at $75 each, for the gala preview party to get first dibs on what will be for sale at the 43rd annual Crosby Festival of the Arts, which opens June 28 at Toledo Botanical Garden.

The party, from 6 to 9 p.m. June 27, includes food, entertainment, and shopping at the artists' booths. Call Toledo Botanical Garden at 419-936-3893.
