OTT: Hats were in bloom for Crosby Award Luncheon

Hats, hats, and more hats of all sizes, shapes, and styles were seen at the seventh annual Crosby Award Luncheon last month at Toledo Botanical Garden. Even the volunteer wait staff - male board members - wore hats. But it was the hats worn by the ladies that added mystique and attitude.

A giant white tent decorated with plants and flowers set the beautiful scene as ladies dined on a delectable menu of garden pea salad in a pastry cup, spring salad, Lake Erie walleye salad, and more. The meal was finished with fresh strawberries marinated in Grand Marnier.

The event was attended by about 160 women at $250 per person. But the real focus was on this year's honorees: Susan Reams and Pat Scheuer.

Mrs. Reams, a passionate advocate for the arts, was the architect of Toledo's One Percent for Art program that was started more than 30 years ago. Her accomplishments have become models for cities and states across the country. Her understanding of the need for the arts in everyone's daily lives, along with her determination and perseverance, have made a major impact on the cultural life in Toledo and Ohio.

Mrs. Scheuer, executive director of Toledo Day Nursery for 14 years, is passionate about the clients the accredited nursery serves. It provides affordable day care for parents who are working or continuing their education.

Mrs. Scheuer was also instrumental in starting the In Another Garden Tour event that provides funds to the nursery.

Past honorees present included Dorothy Price, Edith Franklin, Posy Huebner, Peggy Grant, Margy Trumbull, Sara Jane DeHoff, Denise Gehring, Pat Appold, and Mary Wolfe.

Paula Fall, board member, welcomed everyone, and board president Mimi Creutz presented the awards.

After the luncheon, many ladies remained for a tour of the garden. The estimated net of $18,000 will go toward the planned children's garden.
