Golf outings drive charitable events

The eighth annual Savage Foundation Golf Classic was June 13 at Belmont Country Club with presenting sponsor MetLife Investors USA.

Thirty-two foursomes hit the links, and the winning team, coming in at 13 under par, was sponsored by Pension Innovations & Consulting/John Hancock Retirement Services: Scott Coolman, Todd Schultz, Steve Spiel-denner, and Rick Herman.

More than $90,000 was raised for charities, said event chairman Dan Steinberg, co-president and chief executive officer of Savage Associates. He was assisted by 11 others from Savage who meet year-round to plan the event and select the charity recipients: Mr. Spiel-denner, Pat Paule, Mark Smith, Breana Wrozek, Jerri Ryan, Gary LeSage, Lou Ramirez, Donna Mens, Tom LeStrange, Tim Halko, and Kelly Savage.

The 2011 recipients include Mobile Meals Weekender Program for children; Path to Life services for pregnant women who lack support to cope with an unwanted pregnancy; YWCA for battered, raped, and homeless women and their children, and the Josina Lott mission for services to people with developmental disabilities.

Additionally, funds will go to Junior Achievement, Assistance Dogs of America and Planned Pethood. Ongoing support goes to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the University of Toledo's Foundation-Men's Golf Progress Fund, and the Savage & Associates Inc. Foundation.

The University of Toledo College of Medicine Golf Classic: Linking Toledo with Tomorrow's Medical Leaders took place Monday at the Toledo Country Club. The second annual event was originally set for May 26 but the course was under water due to the storms.

Some of the 150 participants played in the morning followed by lunch, and some lunched, then played the links in the afternoon followed by a cocktails and awards party.

It was a relaxing day, especially since everyone rode in golf carts sponsored by Block Communications Inc., the parent company of The Blade.

The winning team was Huntington National Bank: Sam Sayed, Kevin Kornowa, Mike Holmes, and Mark Sutler.

Management employees created and coordinated the event including Andrea Kalinoski, Kay Langenderfer, and Vicki Riddick.

Among those playing golf were Andy Suhy, a former Toledo Storm player.

The event netted $30,000 for scholarships for medical students interested in staying in northwest Ohio. That's thanks to the participants, committee, and sponsors including Key Private Bank, Health Care Reit, Medical Mutual, ProMedica, and many others,

The fourth annual Merrill Lynch ProMedica Kids Unlimited Celebrity Golf Classic was June 13 at Highland Meadows Golf Club with 150 golfers, including several NFL, NBA, Big Ten, and Notre Dame alumni. The top winning team was Steve Turner, Todd Ansberg, Mark Grabowski, John Swigart, and Todd Esser.

More than $70,000 was raised.

The D.O.V.E. Fund hosted its 11th annual golf outing recently at South Toledo Golf Club. Braving a mid-90s heat wave, 130 golfers teed off to help raise $27,000 for the impoverished in Vietnam. Golf course owner/operator Greg Fish, a D.O.V.E. fund trustee, along with his wife, Raynell, were hosts of the annual event, which was organized by chairman Bob Culp with the assistance of Mr. Fish and trustee John Wiley.

Before the event, Toledo-based Darryl Gatlin and his fiancee, Andrea Ison, entertained the group. Mr. Gatlin, a cousin of the famous Gatlin Brothers country group, also played in the outing.

Fred Grimm, vice chairman of Vietnam projects, thanked everyone, and Mr. Culp was presented with a plaque honoring his father, Capt. Thomas Culp, who was killed in Vietnam in 1969.

The fourth annual Spina Bifida Association of Northwest Ohio Golf Scramble was recently at Heather Downs Country Club. There were 31 teams registered but only one top winner -- the team of Jack Miller, Bob Black, John Brimley, and Nick Vansky.

The estimated net was $5,700. The golf scramble chairman was Ben Fitzpatrick, the association's secretary. The association was founded in 1975 by parents wanting to improve the lives of their children. The chapter is affiliated with the national association to promote the prevention of Spina Bifida and to enhance the lives of those affected.

Promedica had several golf outings:

● Bay Park Hospital golf event was Monday at Belmont Country Club. Of the 20 foursomes, the top winning team was Maumee Bay Turf Center. Lacey Free had the longest women's drive and closest to pin. Longest Drive for men was Chris Allen and closest to pin for men was Chris Hall. The estimated net was $40,000.

● Defiance Regional Hospital Pro-Am and Dinner Auction golf outing was June 17 at Eagle Rock Golf Club. Sixty-eight amateur and 17 golf professionals made up the 17 teams represented by 45 companies throughout the region. The golf was followed by a dinner auction that helped raise $85,000. It was also the unveiling of Kaitlyn's Cottage, a respite care center for people with special needs. Dan and Sharon Farrell donated $1 million toward the project, named in honor of their granddaughter, Kaitlyn, who has Rett syndrome. Groundbreaking for the facility will be in September, with the grand opening scheduled for April, 2012.

● Toledo Children's Hospital Golf Benefit was June 13 at Inverness Club with 150 golfers. The top team was PNC Bank: Heather Bates, Moses Jhirad, Ronald Tozzi and Jeff Slade. Also driving and putting around were Dick LaValley, Jr., Dan LaValley, Jole and Jim Harmon, Erin and Brad Betz, Paul Betz, Don Finnegan, Harvey Tolson and Ramy Eidi, Rita Mansour, Mike Sawyer, Mike Hart, Randy Oostra, Margy Trumbull, Debbie Chapman, and Sara Jane DeHoff. The estimated $97,000 netted was a chip-in for the Autism Collaborative.
