The weather was sweltering, but the thought of snow and refreshing beverages helped guests cool off a bit at a recent Christmas in July party.

The fun was on the SantaSea, which docked July 23 at Maumee River Yacht Club. Tropical holiday tunes filled the air as guests boarded the vessel adorned with three decorated trees, garlands, and lights. Egg nog was replaced with beer, served with limes. The food was a light fare because the weather was so hot, but it included watermelon. Karen Fraker brought cut out cookies, and not one was left. Guests were into the theme -- one wore a Santa hat, another wore bright green deck shoes.

The SantaSea's owners, Lynnette and DaveWerning, host the party annually with Blue Water Communications, owned by Mrs. Werning. It cost a bundle due to gas prices to boat from Gem Beach on Catawba Island down the Maumee River to MRYC, but 'twas the season and the memories of the fun still dance in their heads.

The Alliance Française de Toledo (Toledo French Alliance) gathered at the home of Georgeann Brown and Mark Eleniewski recently to celebrate Bastille Day, the National Day of France. The holiday commemorates the July 14, 1789, storming of the Bastille prison in Paris by the citizens, and many consider it the beginning of the French Revolution.

Dinner was delightful with grilled lamb and salmon and an assortment of French dishes and desserts prepared by the members. Of course, French wine was featured, said member Judy Reitzel. Cherie Williams and other vocalists, including Liliane Dockett, entertained and led everyone in singing "La Marseillaise," the French national anthem.

Tommy's Big 40th Birthday Party ... It's time to grow up! was the theme to honor Tommy Pipatjarasgit, chief executive of Magic Wok Inc. Family and friends partied the night away, including Mr. Pipatjarasgit's wife, Annie.
