Robert and Patricia Mauerer were named the 2011 Outstanding Philanthropists.

National Philanthropy Day was celebrated Nov. 15 by the Northwest Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fund-raising Professionals. The event at the Pinnacle is a thank-you to those who make a difference in the lives of others through their time, talent, and treasure, said chapter president Elizabeth Schurrer.

The emcee was Sara Jane DeHoff, community philanthropist and past award recipient.

The 2011 top honorees, their affiliation, and awards included:

Clayton Stewart of Bowling Green State University, Youth in Philanthropy; Keith Burwell of Toledo Community Foundation, Fundraising Professional; WTOL-TV, Channel 11, Nonprofit Media Coverage; the LaValley Family Foundation, Foundation Award; Stephen D. Taylor of Taylor Automotive, Corporate Philanthropist; the Science Society founders Robert Savage, James Hoffman, and David Waterman, for the Imagination Station volunteer fund-raiser, and Robert and Patricia Maurer of Bowling Green, Philanthropists.

There were too many 2011 Outstanding Community Volunteers to mention but they included Ann Stranahan, Debbie Knight, Paul Belazis, Gail Zimmerman, Ed and Linda Reiter, Barbara Baker, and Marna Ramnath.

Event chairmen were Shumiala Kinnear of BGSU and Heather Slough of the University of Toledo. For more information go to afpnwohio.afpnet.org.

Peter and Colleen Demczuk hosted the Toledo Museum of Art Winter Ball planning meeting at their Maumee mome.

The second annual Toledo Museum of Art Winter Ball is slated for Dec. 10. Committee members have been busy selling tickets ever since the fall champagne meeting in the historic riverfront home of Peter and Colleen Demczuk in Maumee.

The meeting at the home known as "Graystone" was an art experience in itself, and among the attendees was museum director Brian Kennedy. The home, better known to most as the Otto Leroy Hankisson House, was designed in 1929 by Sidney E. Aftel. Indoors one is welcomed with a giant fountain on a terrazzo floor highlighted by the sparkle of the sun peeking through the windows. You can't help but notice the sparkling chandeliers, hand-carved details, gold leaf, marble, planked floors, sandstone accents, and wrought iron details on the limestone Jacobean Revival-style structure.

Proceeds from the Winter Ball, which will be held in the museum's splendid Glass Pavilion, will benefit the museum's Community ArtReach Program which provides free art experiences to schools, families, and underserved populations.

This year's event chairmen are Randy Oostra of ProMedica and Rita Mansour of McDonald Partners with the assistance of many museum staff and volunteers.

Even though DeVilbiss High School is long gone, there is still a DeVilbiss Hall of Fame. The 2011 inductees were honored recently at Inverness Club. Dee Heywood Talmage of the class of 1957, an inductee herself, was the emcee and the event chairman was Tina Twining Moffat (1964).

Inductees included Walt Churchill, Jr. (1947) of Perrysburg; Mary-Ella Holst (1952) of New York City; Judith Daso Herb (1957) of Naples, Fla., and Barrington, Ill.; Jeffrey Kuhman (1964) of Tecumseh, Mich., and Marco Island, Fla.; Terry Crosby (1975) of Great Britain and Toledo; Dean Monske (1982), of Toledo, and Sheronda Boyd (1987) of Toledo.

The holidays are approaching, which means gatherings with family and friends. Don't forget to put me on your invitation list for parties! Contact Barbara Hendel at The Blade, 541 North Superior St., P.O. Box 921, Toledo, OH 43697-0921, or fax 419-724-6105.
