Notre Dame Academy & Junior Academy presented Heart & Soul: A Sporty Evening Honoring our Women in Athletics on March 24 in the school's LaValley Gymnasium.

The Diamond Eagle Award was presented to Suzanne (Malloy) Conrad of the class of 1951 for her outstanding service to the school and Catholic education and its community ministries.

Honorary Chairmen Kelly Savage of the class of 1986 and Beth Riggle of the class of 2005 also were recognized.

Supporters dined from tasty food stations by the Pinnacle and shopped the silent auction. A "Gem of Chance" raffle for a custom-designed piece from Harold Jaffe Jewelers was popular, especially for winners Marty and Mary Ellen Williams.

Auctioneers Sister Mary Ann Culpert, Notre Dame president, and Sister Carol Ann Gregory, past Notre Dame president, enticed folks to bid for the cause. And who could resist after senior Francesca Veluscek talked about how the scholarship fund has touched her life?

Among the nearly 290 guests were John and Beth Zavell, Frank and Sandy Viviano, Denise and Richard Hasbrook, Bill Balzer and Margaret Lockhart, Bev and Joe Rideout, Kate Savage, Jeff and Carol Savage, Pat and Patti Savage-McNamara, Hal and Kelly Reed, Kevin and JoAnn Savage, Ed and Janet Ruszkiewicz, and Jennifer Benedict.

The event raised $139,990 for scholarships. Thanks go to sponsors Buckeye CableSystem, Mike and Jan Barchick, KeyBank, Kelly Savage and Wayne Milewski, both of Savage & Associates, and many others; and event chairmen Collen McGoldrick, Jenny Brady, and Lisa Rectenwald with the assistance of past chairman Pat Kuhr.

St. Ursula Academy March Madness Monte Carlo Night: An evening of NCAA basketball, gaming, and grazing was March 17 in the St. Ursula Field House.

Dealers from soon-to-open Hollywood Casino Toledo ran the blackjack, Texas hold 'em, big six, and other games of skill and chance for cash prizes. A raffle for cash prizes was popular, too; top winner was Marsha Shaw, $1,000.

The event, presented by the Arrow Booster Club which started a year ago, netted nearly $15,000 for St. Ursula athletics, according to president Steve Rafac. The event committee of nearly 20 included Dennis Fernandez, Colleen Dooley, Malory McGowen, and Matt Lewandowski.

Toledo Christian Schools hosted its annual benefit dinner auction "Hooked on TCS" on March 16 at Premier Banquet Center on Heatherdowns Boulevard.

Tackle boxes, fish nets, lures, gummy worms, rope, and more set the fishing theme to lure donations.

Some folks came for free to the silent and live auctions for sports, vacation, and party packages and more. Others paid $40 to dine and there were about 300 attendees.

More than $25,000 was raised for the school's general fund. The event was organized by a committee of a dozen parents including Mark and Laura Knierim, Nancy Smith, Connie Boraby, and Dawn Meier.
