Around Town: Outstanding Scouts are honored

Camp Miakonda was the setting last month for the Erie Shores Council of Boy Scouts of America 86th annual Scouter Recognition Dinner.

The scouting organization, in its centennial year, is still thriving in a fast-paced world, taking time to appreciate nature while learning the values of kindness, leadership, teamwork, survival, respect for others and self, and more.

Audrey Bruggemann, left, one of the gardenters featured during the In Another Garden tour, welcomed guests including Cheri Gosine, Jan Pugh of Packer Creek Pottery, Amy Bruggemann, Pat Scheuer of Toledo Day Nursery, and Erin Bruggemann.

A tasty barbecue dinner was served by council members including the new CEO, Ed Caldwell; Gary Harden, Ed Frey, Jr., Jim Layman, Shawn Chowdhary, Roger Greive, Hal Munger, Bob Thompson, Mark Urrutia, Jim Whitehead, and Dave Wilson.

The ceremony was in the Council Ring where a member of the Order of the Arrow, clad in Delaware Indian attire and carrying a torch, ignited the campfire and the program began. Everyone stood at salute or with hands over heart for the Pledge of Allegiance while the color guard raised the flags, followed by a prayer.

Among the awards presented was the Gregory A. Hendel Lifetime Volunteer Service Award, which is named for my late brother, an Eagle Scout in his youth and a Silver Beaver awardee as an adult. It was presented to David Wilson of Bowling Green.

It is with pride for all of the scouts that I list the other awardees: John C. Harr Lifetime Service Volunteer Award: Roger Carpenter of Oak Harbor; Glenda M. Bowman Lifetime Inspirational Leadership Award: Glenda M. Bowman and Silver Beaver awards to adults John Blodgett, Tom Farkas, Roger Grieve, Scott Mofett, Mark Urrutia, and Jim Wilson.

Enjoying the spectacular Summer Fest were John English, Megan Meyer Foos, and Toledo Councilmen Rob Ludeman, and George Sarantou.

Friends of Toledo Day Nursery 17th annual In Another Garden Tour 2012 showcased Sylvania Township homes surrounding Westfield Mall.

Gardens were at the homes of Nora and Mike Cassidy, Mary and Geoff Humphrys, Sharon Walters, Kerry and Dave McMurray, Jan Simon, Bill and Audrey Bruggemann, and Bill and Sue Horvath.

A preview party was held at the Sylvania Country Club the Thursday night before the tour organized by party chairmen Linda Telb, Doreen Younts, and Deb Skryznecki.

Seen were Barbara and Alan Konop, Keith Burwell, Billie Johnson, Bill and Jean Vaughan, George and Pat Eistetter, Bill and Louise Barkan, Candy and Mike Tauber, Marlene and Tom Uhler, Joan and Rod Durgin, and Mayor Mike Bell, honorary chairman.

The estimated net from the preview and tour is close to $10,000.

TheAnnual Summer Fest, a joint event sponsored by the Toledo Board of Realtors, Home Builders Association of Greater Toledo, Mortgage Bankers Association, and Professional Remodelers Association, was June 14 at Maumee River Yacht Club overlooking the Maumee River.

More than 375 members came by boat, motorcycle, and car to network, enjoy music by the Homewreckers, and a Put-In-Bay style barbecue. Mayor Bell kicked off the festivities which included a Harley Simulator provided by Toledo Harley Davidson.
