Arts shine through the rain at preview party

The Preview Gala Party "Food, Art, Fun" presented by Yark Fiat Friday provided attendees a first chance to see and buy art at the 48th annual Crosby Festival of the Arts presented by The Andersons Saturday and Sunday at Toledo Botanical Garden.

Many folks stayed under the tent with food, spirits, and music while others braved the rainy weather and shopped.

Joanne McElheney, protected by a designer rain coat, boots, hat, and umbrella, strolled the grounds with her husband, Bill. Nancy Robon, there with husband Marv, sported her flower-motif umbrella and safari-style shoes for mud walking. Laurie Gross was in hat and rain coat, too. Mary Galvin sported one of the purchases she made that night, a colorful one-of-a-kind T-shirt.

Dale Dillon and Rachel Macksey didn’t let rain stop them from attending the Crosby Festival Preview gala.

Among the more than 350 attendees were Carol and Mike Anderson, Jo and Gene Hardy, Tim Valko and Jim Moore, Tom McHugh and Jeannie Hylant, Larry and Kathy Ulrich, Doug Adams-Arman, Connie Haigh Gibbons and sister-in-law Andrea Gibbons, Jerry Chabler, Chuck and Carol Stocking, John and Sue Hadley and daughter Erica Hadley, and Denise and Richard Hasbrook.

More than 10,000 people shopped more than 200 art booths over the weekend. Typically the net is more than $200,000, but the totals are not in.

AN evening to support SEAL-Naval Special Warfare (NSW) Family Foundation was presented by the Thompson Williams Donahue Group, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management on June 27 at Inverness Club. The nonprofit organization based in San Diego supports Naval Special Warfare warriors and their families.

Among the 45 guests were featured speakers Capt. Robert Schoultz, Capt. Peter Toennies, and Lt. Carl Swepston, career SEALs spanning four decades. More than $10,000 was raised.

Jim Whitehead was the recipient of the John Haar Lifetime Volunteer Service Award.

The Erie Shores Council of the Boy Scouts of America hosted its 87th annual Scouter Recognition Dinner on June 6 at historic Camp Miakonda DeVilbiss Scout Reservation. The outdoor event started with the Order of the Arrow national honor society lighting the ceremonial campfire by Tindeuchen Lodge 522, a Color Guard by Troop 154, pledge of allegiance, and prayer.

Running the program were Eagle Scouts Paul Rhoades and Greg Hall; Venture Scout Lyndsey McCann; Council President Gary Harden; Council Commissioner Ed Frey; awards chairman Hank Newcome, and event chairman Glenda Bowman.

Diane and Hal Hawk of Fremont were honored with the Gregory Hendel Lifetime Volunteer Service Award for leadership in the business community. James Whitehead of Maumee was honored with the John Haar Lifetime Volunteer Service Award for leadership in the community. Cynthia Horne of Green Springs was honored posthumously with the Glenda M. Bowman Lifetime Inspirational Award for being a positive role model who demonstrates courage in the face of adversity.

The Silver Beaver award, the highest award an adult volunteer can receive, was presented to Jack Bohland of Walbridge, Brenda Corr of Holland, James Dollman, Sr. and Dennis Fairchild of Toledo, and Timothy Myers of Bowling Green.

Hal and Diane Hawk received the Gregory Hendel Lifetime Volunteer Service Award at the Boy Scouts of America’s annual recognition dinner.

District Award of Merit awardees were William Bisbee, Jr., Van Husted III, Kim Kaseman, Jeff Petersberger, John Shaffer, and Eric Timm of Lucas County; James Crawford and Jeannie Myriah Crimmins of Wood County; Kami Brough of Ottawa County; and William Giezie of Sandusky County.

A 75 Year Veteran Award was presented to Paul Koester of Toledo. Special awards for heroism were presented to youth: Logan TenEyck, Nathan Goulet and William Kelly.
