TWO hundred of Toledo’s prominent women paid $125 each to attend the Ladies for the Clubs annual luncheon to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Toledo. The event was Oct. 4 at Inverness Club.

Keynote speaker was glass artist Kelly Sheehan, owner of Kellfireglass, a Toledo Museum of Art docent, and member of the teaching staff at the museum’s Glass Pavilion.
Mrs. Sheehan has instructed members of the Boys & Girls Clubs in glassblowing.
Nearly $40,000 was raised. Event chairman was Sara Moynihan, who is in line to be the club’s third female board president. Cochairman was Ann Searles, a Boys and Girls Clubs trustee.
Also on the committee were Tiffany Cavanaugh, Dee Douglas, Mary Fedderke, Becky Fuhrman, Andrea Gibbons, Wendy Gramza, and Jeannie Hylant.
Among the nearly 30 table captains were Pat Appold, Shayla Bell, Jackie Berenzweig, Erin Betz, Stephanie Cihon, Kathy Francis, Micki Hambro, Darla Harbaugh, Sandra Hylant, Debbie Joslin, Katherine Joslin, Karen Lucas, Kathie Maxwell, Toni Moore, Susan Morgan, Vivian Moynihan, Susie Nowak, Brigid O’Neal, Sharon Quatlebaum, Connie Schmidt, Keri Suhy, and Eileen Sullivan.
A LUNCHEON Sept. 28 at Sylvania United Church of Christ was a booming success and loads of fun. The “All Babies are Royal” luncheon to benefit Polly Fox Academy enticed 85 ladies to don hats and enjoy an elegant lunch amid butterflies and pink decor. Admission was a $10 ticket plus a package of diapers.
Students spoke about the program and its benefits. The academy, a community charter school sponsored by Toledo Pubic Schools, provides a free academic program and social services support to pregnant and parenting teenage girls.
The event raised $1,000, computer equipment, diapers, and baby clothes. Thanks go to event chairmen Cheryl Crandell and Tami Williams and all of the volunteers, church members, and attendees.
TWO SUVs were filled to the brim with donated diapers for the Christ Child Society of Toledo’s Layette Program. They were gathered during the organization’s annual Red Wagon Show on Oct. 1 at Inverness Club.
More than 120 women attended the luncheon, which included raffles and a silent auction. Centering each table were red wagons, the local society’s symbol, filled with freshly cut fall flowers.
Nancy Smythe was presented with the Red Wagon Award by Jan Purinton for her many years of volunteer service to the organization.
The $4,100 that was raised goes toward the purchase of supplies included in the layettes.
More than 700 newborn layettes per year are distributed to hospitals and social service agencies that serve needy families in the Toledo area.
Event chairmen Marty Nordstrum, Mary Tonjes, Maryjane Charla, and Connie Fields were assisted by their 2012 classmates.
The president of the Christ Child Society of Toledo is Cecile Bennett.
FLOWER Hospital Auxiliary “Afternoon Tea” Sept. 22 in the Atrium at Hickman Cancer Center was a lovely soiree.
Teapots filled with colorful fall flowers centered each table as members sipped tea specially blended for the event. Nibbles included finger sandwiches, fruits, sweets, and cookies in the shape of a tea bag.

Among the more than 100 guests were Rosemary Harroun, Pat Toepfer, Joan Dionyssiou, Donna Frendt, Anita Graves, Ann Galloway, Barbara McCloskey, Anna Mae Sattler, Pamela Shaffer, Shirley Bettinger, and Debbie Packo and daughter Alana.
AN OLD Fashioned New England Clam Bake at the Maritime Academy of Toledo Sept. 20 turned into a celebration. A day before the event, the academy signed a deal with a Netherlands firm to put new, state-of-the- art maritime simulators in One Maritime Plaza. The project, to be done in four phases through 2017, will start in December.
As a result of the agreement, the event also turned into the launch of a capital campaign by the academy’s foundation to fund the project.
The goal is to raise $500,000 during the next five years.
Using a demonstration simulator, guests experienced piloting a ship through the New York Harbor.
The clam bake, prepared by executive chefs Ed Gozdowski and David Napierala, featured shrimp, lobster, clams, mussels, red skin potatoes, corn on the cob, and desserts.
