Professor explores ‘Arab Americans in Toledo'

'Arab Americans in Toledo' was edited by Samir Abu-Absi.

A new book edited by a University of Toledo English professor emeritus explores the Arab-American community in Toledo from its early beginnings to current times.

Samir Abu-Absi worked with more than 30 writers and editors for "Arab Americans in Toledo: Cultural Assimilation and Community Involvement" (298 pages, the University of Toledo Press, $25).

He said in a news release that the book should debunk stereotypes of Arab-Americans as it features numerous local figures, such as Jamie Farr, Labib Hajjar, and George Isaac, who have led thriving careers.

Mr. Abu-Asi was born in Lebanon and came to the United States for graduate school. He joined the UT faculty and moved to Toledo, where he has lived for more than 40 years.

The book is available at the UT bookstore and at Borders.
