Cleveland woman injured when train struck car
10/7/2012MARBLEHEAD, Ohio -- A Cleveland-area woman was seriously injured early today when a train struck her stalled car on a railroad crossing and the car hit her, the Ohio Highway Patrol reported.
Tiffany M. Fischer, 33, of Rocky River, Ohio, was flown following the 4:55 a.m. collision to University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital.
Troopers from the patrol's Sandusky post said Ms. Fischer was southbound on South Danbury Road when her car stopped on the tracks at a Norfolk Southern railroad crossing. She exited the vehicle, but then stood next to it as an eastbound freight train approached and waved her arms in an attempt to get the train to stop before hitting her car.
The 72-car train did not stop in time, and the collision's impact caused the auto to spin counterclockwise and strike Ms. Fischer, who along with the car was pushed off the tracks, troopers said. The train stopped 2,100 feet beyond the crossing.
The reason for the car stopping on the tracks remained under investigation today. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident, and charges were pending, troopers said.
