OSU to retire Jackson's No. 22

COLUMBUS - Former Ohio State men's basketball players Jim Jackson, a Toledo native, and Gary Bradds, and former OSU women's basketball player Katie Smith will have their numbers officially retired.

Jackson averaged 19.2 points per game during his three years at Ohio State, a span in which the Buckeyes went to the NCAA tournament each year and won the Big Ten Conference championship twice.

Jackson, who this week was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, was named Big Ten freshman of the year in 1990 and Big Ten player of the year in 1991 and 1992. He has played for seven teams since being drafted in 1992 by Dallas.

Jackson led Macomber to the Division I state title in 1989 and was twice named Mr. Basketball in Ohio.

Bradds, who played for the Buckeyes from 1962 to 1964, was a two-time All-American who averaged 20.7 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game. He was selected as National Player of the Year in 1964 after averaging 30.6 points and 13.4 rebounds.

Smith, the Big Ten's women's career scoring leader, averaged 20.8 points per game and led the Buckeyes to their first Final Four appearance in 1993 as a freshman. Smith was chosen as an All-American twice, a first team all-Big Ten player three times, and Big Ten Player of the Year in 1996.

Bradds's No. 35 will be retired Jan. 27 at halftime of the Ohio State-Michigan State game. Jackson's No. 22 will be retired at halftime of the Ohio State-Wisconsin game on Feb. 10 and Smith's No. 30 will be retired at halftime of the Ohio State-Michigan women's game on Jan. 21.
