Cincinnati State knocks off Owens; Findlay records win

CINCINNATI - Owens Community College fell to Cincinnati State, 88-62, last night as the winners shot 52 percent from the field and 67 per cent from the free throw line, had a 39-33 lead in rebounds, and forced 19 turnovers.

Rodney Hughes (11 points) and Lamar Chears (10) led Owens (16-2, 3-1).

Jamaal Crenshaw topped Cincinnati State (10-5, 4-0) with 18 points.

The Express will face Lakeland Community College at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m.


FINDLAY 92, NORTHWOOD 87

MIDLAND, Mich. - Tony Hiser scored 26 points before fouling out and Kyle Hunt added 21 for Findlay.

The Oilers (13-1, 6-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate) led 47-41 at halftime and held the Timberwolves to 45.8 percent shooting from the field but Northwood hit 50 percent from the 3-point arc for the game. Findlay finished the game with 54 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from 3-point range.

Nick Davidson led Northwood (4-11, 2-6) with 25 points, Kenyada Dent added 23, and Chris Riley added 18.

Brett Dalrymple scored 18 points for the Oilers, and Charles Warren scored 15.


WILMINGTON 84, HEIDELBERG 81

WILMINGTON, Ohio - Kevin Long scored 17 points in a balanced attack.

Adam Weber and Matt Vehorn added 15 points apiece, and Dan Shardo had 13 for Wilmington (5-9, 2-6 OAC).

Ryan Szepiela had 20, Randy Evans 18 and Ryan Florry 12 for Heidelberg (4-10, 1-7).

Heidelberg had 13 more attempts (32-of-71) than Wilmington (30-of-58) despite the Quakers' dominance rebounding (41 to 34). But Wilmington won it at the line, going 17-of-23 compared with Heidelberg's 11-of-15.


OHIO NORTHERN 70, MARIETTA 63

ADA, Ohio - Chad Bostelman scored 15 points in Ohio Northern's overtime victory.

The Pioneers (8-6, 3-5 Ohio Conference) trailed the entire game until Wade Krause tipped in a missed shot to tie it at 59 with seven seconds to go. Marietta then took its first lead on two free throws by Adam Means 30 seconds into overtime, but Bostelman hit two 3-pointers to give the Polar Bears (11-2, 7-1 OAC) the lead for good.

Ohio Northern led 42-28 after Bostelman hit a 3-pointer with 13:25 to go, but Marietta outscored the Polar Bears 31-17 over the final 13 minutes to send the game to overtime.

Jesse DuPerow led Marietta with 22 points and 13 rebounds, but fouled out late in regulation. Krause added 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Kris Oberdick had 14 points for Ohio Northern, Aaron Fries had 13 and Mike Haynes added 12.


CALVIN 85, ADRIAN 60

ADRIAN - Calvin's Jeremy Veenstra scored 23 points, pulled down 8 rebounds and had 6 assists.

Bryan Foltice and Josh Tubergen scored 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Knights (12-2, 3-0 Michigan Intercollegiate), who finished the second half with a 32-32 tie against the Bulldogs.

In the second half, Calvin held Adrian (8-6, 1-3) to 10-of-35 from the field and 2-of-12 from 3-point range.

Dan Walter led the Bulldogs with 19 points, which was followed by Steve Herron's 15 and Mike Lagger's 11.


BLUFFTON 82, HANOVER 77

BLUFFTON - The Beavers (10-4, 2-2) handed Hanover (13-2, 3-1) its first league loss as Ben Coole scored 24 points, Rod Overmyer 20, and Travis Elsass 18.

Bluffton trailed 49-42 at halftime but outscored Hanover 40-28 in the second half.


DEFIANCE 95, MANCHESTER 85

DEFIANCE - The Yellow Jackets (8-6, 2-1) rebounded from a 10-point halftime deficit to post a 10-point victory with a strong second half, outscoring Manchester (10-4, 2-2) 60-40.

Five players were in double figures for Defiance - Eric Viney 22; Frank Kill and Jason Hervey 19, Marcus Alexander 14, and Gavin Sever 11. Manchester's Marc Patterson led all scorers with 36 points.


GRAND VALLEY 86, HILLSDALE 62

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Matt Mlynarchek scored 13 and Chris Northcross 11 as the Chargers fell to the Lakers. John Flynn tallied 21 for Grand Valley.


SIENA HEIGHTS 92, AQUINAS 77

ADRIAN - Siena Heights (17-3, 3-1) pulled out to a 45-29 halftime lead and coasted to the victory as Sean Carlson scored 25 points and Matt Baaki 20.


URBANA 84, TIFFIN 75

URBANA, OHIO - Kipp Huntsberger tallied 18 points and Nilzarrel Townsend 12 for the Dragons. Robert Lewis scored 31 for Urbana.

CINCINNATI STATE 69, OWENS CC 48

CINCINNATI - The Express played well in the middle of the game but was outscored in the beginning and end of the contest.

Owens (13-4, 3-1) started out trailing 22-5 before tying the game at 40 with 10:30 to play before Cincinnati State (13-3, 4-0) pulled away with a 29-8 run to conclude the game.

Forward Doye Byrd scored 15 points for Owens, but the Express couldn't stop Cincinnati State's 6-3 Delvona Oliver, who scored 24 points and added 13 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

Owens returns home to face Lakeland Community College on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
