Area basketball roundup: Carter gets 1000th point for Hillsdale

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Ed Carter scored 29 points to surpass the 1,000 mark for his career as Hillsdale rallied to defeat Saginaw Valley State 85-75 yesterday.

Carter is a 6-2 senior guard from Detroit.

Chris Northcross had 17 points with 12 rebounds, Jonathon Dues scored 15 points and Matt Mlynarchek added 14 points with 11 rebounds for Hillsdale (14-4, 6-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

Cameron Nichols had 19 points to lead four players in double figures for the Cardinals (9-7, 2-6), who led 41-36 at halftime but shot just 38 percent the rest of the way.


OWENS CC 74, EDISON STATE CC 58

PIQUA, Ohio - Doug Whiteman hit two 3-pointers to start the second half to spark Owens, which steadily pulled away after leading 36-34 at halftime. Whiteman had seven assists and scored all eight of his points in the second half.

Lamar Chears and Jeremy King each scored 13 points to lead Owens. Rodney Hughes added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Express (18-2, 5-1 Ohio Community College Athletic Conference).

Edison's Anson Brock scored 15 of his game-high 17 from beyond the 3-point arc for Edison (10-9, 3-3)

Owens returns home to play Cuyahoga CC on Wednesday at 7 p.m.


SAINT LOUIS 71, CINCINNATI 62

ST. LOUIS - Chris Heinrich had 14 points and 11 rebounds and made two key baskets in overtime for Saint Louis.

It was the second straight overtime game for Saint Louis (11-7, 3-2 Conference USA), which lost 72-62 in overtime on Thursday at Memphis. This time, Saint Louis outscored Cincinnati (12-5, 3-2) 11-2 in the extra period.

Cincinnati shot only 34.5 percent overall and made only one of six attempts in overtime. The Bearcats were 6-for-21 from 3-point range after hitting half of their 60 long-range attempts the previous four games.

Steve Logan had a career-high 32 points for Cincinnati but was scoreless the last seven minutes. Kenny Satterfield, the Bearcats' leading scorer with a 16-point average, was held to nine, largely by the defense of Maurice Jeffers.


ADRIAN 88, ROCHESTER 86

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Adrian's Dan Walter hit a 15-footer with two seconds left in overtime.

Chris Howard scored seven points in overtime and finished with 24 for Adrian (10-6). Steve Brooks added 23, including a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in regulation that sent the game into overtime.


OHIO NORTHERN 97, CAPITAL 61

BEXLEY, Ohio - Kris Oberdick scored 22 points for Ohio Northern, sinking 9 of 12 shots from the field.

Kyle Lowry scored 16 points, Jim Conrad had 14 and Chad Bostleman added 11 for Ohio Northern (13-2, 9-1 Ohio Conference).


MICHIGAN TECH 73, FINDLAY 51

FINDLAY - J.T. Kuginski scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Michigan Tech over Findlay, breaking the Oilers' nine-game winning streak.

Kyle Hunt (Central Catholic) led the Oilers (14-2, 7-2) with 15 points, but was just 5-of-19 from the field.

OWENS CC 66, EDISON STATE CC 52

PIQUA, Ohio - The Express won a key Ohio Community College Athletic Conference game by playing what coach Bill Gomoluch called “our best team effort of the year at both ends of the floor.”

Owens (15-4) entered the game tied with Edison State and Cincinnati State at 4-1 in the conference.

Jana Babyak had 12 points and 15 rebounds for Owens, and Doye Byrd added 10 points.

Eight of Byrd's 10 points came from the free-throw line. Owens went 23-for-34 from the line, compared with 11-for-23 by Edison (10-8).
