Late Findlay TD edges Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio - Jeremy Smith ran one yard for a touchdown with 35 seconds left as Findlay beat Ashland 25-20 yesterday.

The Oilers (7-1, 6-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference) moved 70 yards on eight plays in just over a minute, capped off by Smith's touchdown, after the Eagles (2-7, 2-6) had taken a 20-17 lead with 1:38 left.

Ty Rhoad led Findlay with six catches for 131 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown. Jeff Fraser finished 24-for-38 for 253 yards and a touchdown.

Ashland's Michael Hull caught 14 passes for 189 yards.

WALSH 31, GENEVA 7

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Derek Besgrove, from Clay High, ran for a school-record 317 yards and two touchdowns to lead Walsh to victory.

Besgrove scored on runs of 71 yards in the first quarter and four yards in the fourth while becoming the first Cavaliers player to rush for 300 yards in a game.

Besgrove, who had 40 carries, accounted for all but 48 of Walsh's total yards of offense. The Cavaliers (7-1, 3-1 Mid-States) got only 10 yards passing from Winston Woods, who went 2-of-13 with an interception.

HILLSDALE 31, MICHIGAN TECH 7

HILLSDALE - Dan Wilson ran for two touchdowns and Bill Skelton threw one pass for a score for Hillsdale.

Wilson scored on a three-yard run in the second quarter and a 23-yard run in the fourth to extend the margin of victory for the Chargers (3-5, 3-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate).

Skelton's 18-yard pass to Mike Gerbasi in the first quarter opened the scoring.

OHIO NORTHERN 28, OTTERBEIN 7

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - Adam Quirk threw for a touchdown and rushed for another for the Polar Bears.

Quirk scored on a six-yard run in the first quarter and threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Greg Evilsizor in the second for the Polar Bears (3-4, 3-3 Ohio Conference).

FRANKLIN 24, DEFIANCE 23

FRANKLIN, Ind. - Clayton Beard's 21-yard field goal with 1:46 remaining lifted Franklin to victory.

Beard's field goal came about five minutes after Defiance's Keith Wilson had kicked a 38-yarder to give the Yellow Jackets (2-6, 0-4 Heartland) a 23-21 lead.

Defiance's Mike Moran, from Bedford High, scored on a one-yard run late in the third quarter to leave Franklin (2-5, 2-1) ahead 21-20, when the extra-point attempt was blocked.

Moran gained 119 yards on 27 carries to lead Defiance, and Corey Minnfield, from Woodward High, completed 20 of 36 passes for 242 yards.

DAYTON 35, TIFFIN 20

TIFFIN - Kelly Spiker ran for a touchdown and threw for another for Dayton.

Tiffin's Nate Washington caught 13 passes for 207 yards, including a 65-yard TD toss.

Ryan Harpold completed 34 of 52 passes for 391 yards for Tiffin (1-6), which outgained Dayton 456 yards to 313 yards.

JOHN CARROLL 59, HEIDELBERG 21

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - Ryan DeGeorge rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns and Tony Beiting threw for four touchdowns for John Carroll (6-1).

Gary Tope rushed for 140 yards on 34 carries for the 'Berg (1-6, 1-5 OAC) and Jake Moore caught eight passes for 113 yards and two TDs.

OLIVET 23, ADRIAN 10

OLIVET, Mich. -

Adrian quarterback Adam Tubaro threw for 192 yards and teammate Andy Keimer caught for 103. Kevin Bostelman led the Bulldogs (5-2, 2-1) in rushing with 110 yards.

MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 37, BLUFFTON 35

CINCINNATI - Mike Dane threw four touchdown passes, and Pat McAtee scored on a safety with 3:22 left to play to lift Mount St. Joseph to victory.

Brad Moore threw three touchdown passes for Bluffton.
