Ohio Northern gets 1st win; Tiffin falls short to Dayton

MARIETTA, Ohio - Zach Weber rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown and Jeff Soliday passed and ran for scores as Ohio Northern beat Marietta 21-13 yesterday for its first win this season.

Soliday's one-yard run gave the Polar Bears (1-5, 1-4 Ohio Conference) a 13-7 lead with 5:08 left in the second quarter. Weber scored on a three-yard run in the third to make it 21-7.

Justin Papania completed 29 of 40 passes for 340 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions for the Pioneers (1-5, 0-5). Brett Munn returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown, and Brian Haines had seven catches for 120 yards for Marietta.

Soliday finished 19-of-31 for 261 yards with an interception and a 39-yard TD pass to Greg Evilsizor.

DAYTON 27, TIFFIN 23

DAYTON- Cliff Sachini carried 30 times for 108 yards to anchor Dayton's ball-control offense.

The Flyers (7-1) ran 68 rushing plays, more than twice as many as Tiffin (2-5), and had a 121/2-minute edge in time of possession.

Geno Mattioda ran for 83 yards and a touchdown, Brandon Staley added another on a four-yard run and Jason Schmidt scored on a 25-yard run, his lone carry.

Staley was 4-of-11 for 95 yards passing and Jason Resch kicked field goals of 46 and 25 yards.

Ryan Harpold was 11-of-25 for 136 yards and two touchdowns for Tiffin but was intercepted twice.

Trailing 27-13 after three quarters, Tiffin then scored on a 32-yard field goal by Ben Sandrock and on an 11-yard pass to Nate Washington, who had nine catches for 123 yards.

But two late turnovers blunted Tiffin's rally.

Joe Stephens picked off a pass from Harpold on Tiffin's next possession, and Jare McQuiston recovered a fumble by Harpold with 1:51 left.

MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 17, DEFIANCE 0

CINCINNATI - Andy Wellendorf scored on a six-yard pass from Mike Dane and Jeff Williams returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown for Mount St. Joseph.

Mount St. Joseph was on the short end in first downs and in rushing, passing, and total yards.

Corey Minnfield was 23-of-43 for 237 yards for Defiance (1-6, 0-3) but was intercepted three times. Jason Gendron rushed 25 times for 68 yards.

Defiance had 17 first downs to 10 for Mount St. Joseph, and a 353-262 edge in total yards. The Yellowjackets held the ball 21/2 minutes longer than Mount St. Joseph, but also were penalized 13 times for 141 yards.

CAPITAL 56, HEIDELBERG 10

COLUMBUS - Matt Friesner caught three of Rocky Pentello's four touchdown passes and also threw a scoring pass to his quarterback as unbeaten Capital beat Heidelberg.

Friesner had five catches for 118 yards with touchdown receptions of 10 yards in the first quarter and 17 and 40 yards in the second as the Crusaders (6-0, 5-0 Ohio Conference) built a 42-3 lead at the half.

Pentello completed 11 of 18 passes for 254 yards. He also threw an 83-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Rankin and caught a nine-yard TD pass from Friesner.

Brett Hastings led the 'Berg (1-5, 1-4) with 100 yards rushing on 19 carries.

HOPE 33, ADRIAN 7

HOLLAND, Mich. - Joe Verschueren caught two touchdown passes to lead Hope.

Hope (4-2, 3-0 MIAA) kept the Bulldogs (5-1, 1-1) off the board until 9:40 of the third quarter, when Adam Tubaro capped a 58-yard drive with a 13-yard pass to Brad Maska.

INDIANAPOLIS 22, FINDLAY 19

INDIANAPOLIS - Matt Kohn threw for 226 yards and one touchdown to lead Indianapolis.

Nick Parker kicked three field goals for Indianapolis (4-3, 3-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), including a 52-yarder and a 26-yarder in the fourth quarter.

Findlay's Robert Campbell tied the game in the fourth quarter with a two-yard run, but Parker's last field goal put the Greyhounds back on top.

Kevin Crooks threw for 247 yards for the Oilers (4-3, 3-3) and was intercepted once.

HANOVER 52, BLUFFTON 10

HANOVER, Ind. - Brett Dietz completed 28 of 41 passes for 415 yards and four touchdowns to lead Hanover.

Jared Owens was 17-of-22 for 184 yards and an interception for the Beavers (2-4, 0-2), whose only touchdown came on Ben McCullough's one-yard run in the fourth quarter. Ben Dodds ran for 89 yards on 18 carries.
