Men's basketball roundup: Owens falls to top-ranked Columbus State

COLUMBUS - Owens Community College hung tough before falling 91-80 yesterday afternoon to top-ranked Columbus State (22-0).

The Express trailed 43-40 at halftime before quickly falling behind 63-47. Third-ranked Owens (18-3) rallied to within three points with about seven minutes to play before Col-umbus State pulled away, making eight of its last nine free throws.

Dominic Harrison led Owens with 15 points, followed by Terrell Brown (14) and Andrae Martin (13). Jeremy Robinson and Thomas Clay came off the bench to contribute 10 points apiece, with Robinson adding five assists and no turnovers.

Aaron Nixon poured in 34 points for Columbus State.

OHIO NORTHERN 76, MOUNT UNION 58

ALLIANCE, Ohio - Jim Conrad scored 23 points to lead Ohio Northern.

Conrad scored six during a 15-4 go-ahead run that gave the Polar Bears (14-5, 8-4 Ohio Conference) a 56-46 lead with 8:18 left in the game.

Ohio Northern s Billy Barkimer had 12 points and 10 assists, while Chad Bostelman (Napoleon) scored 11 and Mark Killian 10.

Rob Paulauskas led the Purple Raiders (12-7, 7-5) with 13 points, and Chris Blakely had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

CAPITAL 68, HEIDELBERG 46

COLUMBUS - Tyler Alexander had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Capital.

Jake Beck (St. John s) and Brian Alge each added 12 points for the Crusaders (14-5, 8-4 Ohio Conference), who opened the game with a 21-6 run and never trailed.

Heidelberg s Lucas Messer (Clyde), the OAC s leading scorer, scored only seven points - 14 below his average.

ADRIAN 76, CALVIN 62

ADRIAN, Mich. - Brian Schaefer scored 20 points in Adrian s win.

Adam Novak hit a jump shot with just more than 14 minutes remaining in the second to give the Bulldogs (12-7, 5-2 Michigan Intercollegiate) their final lead.

Calvin (11-8, 4-3) led 29-25 at the half, but was outscored 51-33 in the second by Adrian s 57.7 percent shooting.

Jeff Nokovich contributed 14 points for the Bulldogs.

Kevin Broene led all scorers, netting 22 points for the Knights.

GANNON 77, HILLSDALE 73

ERIE, Pa. - Geoff Husted scored 22 points off the bench for Gannon.

Hillsdale s Tom Farmer led all scorers with 35 points, and Corey Coe added 12 points off the bench for the Chargers (11-9, 4-6 Great Lakes Intercollegiate).

Husted became the 24th player in Gannon (16-5, 7-4) history to score 1,000 points.

Brandon Edwards scored 17 for the the Golden Knights, who led 36-30 at the half.

FINDLAY 85, ASHLAND 69

FINDLAY - Tyson McGlaughlin (Ottawa-Glandorf) was 8-of-8 from the free throw line, scoring 23 points to lead Findlay.

Findlay (16-5, 8-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate) trailed only once in the game, when a jumper by Alex Jones put Ashland up 8-7 early in the first period.

The Oilers had a 47-33 lead at the half.

Jones led Ashland (9-12, 2-9) with 14 points. Kevin Shorter was the only other Eagles player to score in double digits, with 10.

Dustin Pfeifer was 11-of-14 from the free throw line, and finished with 18 points for Findlay. Chris Commons (Central Catholic) added 13, and Brad Rethman grabbed seven rebounds.

As a team, the Oilers dominated the Eagles by going to the free throw line 23 times more than Ashland. Findlay connected on 33-of-40 attempts from the line compared to 12-of-17 for the Eagles.

HANOVER 69, BLUFFTON 67

BLUFFTON - Senior Brad Boyles and freshman Michael Anthony tallied 19 points each for Bluffton. Sophomore Scott Bergman (Woodmore) finished with 13 points and a team high five rebounds.

Thad McCracken led Hanover with 14 points.

Bluffton falls to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in the Heartland Collegeiate Athletic Conference. Hanover is 18-1, 8-0.

Bluffton and Hanover both shot 48 percent for the contest. Hanover narrowly won the rebound contest with 29 to the Beavers 28. Hurting the Beavers were turnovers as they committed 14 to Hanover s eight. The Panthers then converted 20 points off of Bluffton turnovers.

DEFIANCE 83, FRANKLIN 81

DEFIANCE - Defiance College improved to 3-5 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and 9-9 overall as Franklin fell to 3-5 in the league and 11-8.

Both schools are now in a four-way tie for fourth place in the HCAC standings.

Franklin led by six points at 30-24 in the opening half before Defiance rallied to take a 46-45 lead at the break.

The Yellow Jackets, who avenged an 88-68 road loss to Franklin three weeks ago, got a game-high 29 points from guard Curt Croy. Croy hit four 3-point baskets and 9 of 11 free throw attempts. Aaron Lammers tallied 20 points for Defiance.

The Grizzlies were led by freshman forward Darrius Jackson, who matched his career-high points total with 20 points in 29 minutes. Freshman guard Alan Davidson added a career-best 19 points, hitting all six of his field goal attempts, and senior Justin Castelli chipped in 12.

Franklin out-shot Defiance 51 to 47 percent but was out-rebounded 31-30 by the Yellow Jackets.

SHAWNEE STATE 67, TIFFIN 54

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Delano Thomas led Shawnee State with 18 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. The game is his 8th consecutive double-double. Adam Davenport added 15 points and 7 rebounds. Nick Donley chipped in with 10 points.

Lucius Sullivan led Tiffin s Dragons with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Nick Scheutzow also had 11 points. Zachary Dezarn chipped in with 10 points off the bench.

Shawnee State connected on 24 of 53 attempts from the field for 45 percent, while holding Tiffin to just 34.5 percent (19-55).
