Men's basketball roundup: Badenhop scores 31 as ONU wins

ADA, Ohio - Greg Badenhop scored 31 points - including a tying 3-pointer and three clinching free throws - to lead Ohio Northern to a 67-63 win over Capital yesterday.

Badenhop's 3-pointer with 3:31 left pulled the Polar Bears (9-3, 4-2 Ohio Athletic Conference) into a tie at 56-56 after trailing by as many as nine points in the second half.

The teams traded baskets before Nate Lieb's 3-pointer with

1:23 remaining put Ohio Northern ahead to stay. With the Polar Bears holding on to a one-point lead, Badenhop hit three foul shots in the final 29 seconds to close the scoring.

Badenhop (Liberty Center) was the only player in double figures for Ohio Northern, making 10 of 21 shots from the field, 3 of 9 3-pointers and 8 of 10 free throws.

Steve Kyser (Southview) scored 20 points, Nate Stahl had 12 and Brad Buckner 10 for Capital (5-7, 2-4).

BLUFFTON 71, HANOVER 61

HANOVER, Ind. - Scott Bergman scored 33 points as the Beavers continued the best start in school history.

Bergman (Woodmore) was 10-for-15 from the field - including 4-for-7 from 3-point range - and 9-for-10 from the free throw line. He also had nine rebounds and four assists.

Michael Anthony added 12 points and Eric Sweet 10 for Bluffton (12-1, 2-0 HCAC).

CINCINNATI STATE 92, OWENS CC 74

Turnovers (16 in the second half, 24 overall) proved to be the downfall as Owens Community College dropped its OCCAC opener.

DeAuntay Scott led the Express (15-2 overall, 0-1 OCCAC) with 19 points, followed by Julian Logan with 14 and Vershawn Chears with 13.

Jarelle Redden of Cincinnati State (9-6, 1-0) took scoring honors with 23 points.

FERRIS STATE 83, HILLSDALE 78

HILLSDALE, Mich. - Antwuan Holt sunk six 3-pointers as he scored 24 points for Ferris State.

Terrance Shaw added 16 points and Dennis Springs (Scott) netted 14 for Ferris State (8-6, 5-0 Great Lakes).

Drew Powell led Hillsdale (7-6, 4-1) with 20 points, and Tony Gugino came off the bench to score 19 points and pull down 11 rebounds.

FINDLAY 68, GANNON 53

FINDLAY - Dorian Bass scored 18 points and Findlay made few mistakes.

Frank Phillips and Brent Schnipke each added 13 points and Dustin Pfeifer had 10 for the Oilers (12-2, 5-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate).

Findlay shot 59 percent from the field (27-of-46) and had just five turnovers to 19 by the Golden Knights (7-7, 1-3).

Shelby Chaney was the only player for Gannon in double figures, with 12 points.

Findlay held the Golden Knights to just 16 points in the opening half while building a 13-point lead.

MOUNT UNION 90, HEIDELBERG 87

ALLIANCE, Ohio - Kyle Karpinski scored 27 points and L.J. Helton chipped in with a career-high 21 to lead Mount Union (3-10, 2-4 OAC).

Shawn Shriver had 17 points, Greg Tyson, Ron Higgins and Brian Schmidt each scored 12 and Andrew Lemmon had 11 for Heidelberg (6-7, 2-4).

SHAWNEE STATE 78, TIFFIN 69

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Terrence Davison went 6-for-7 from 3-point range and scored 27 points to lead Shawnee State (6-11, 2-3 AMC).

Deonte Murphy had 18 points, Ryan Pessell 14 and Hernandez Skiver 12 for Tiffin (9-6, 1-5). Lamont Ellis had seven assists for the Dragons.

FRANKLIN 87, DEFIANCE 77

FRANKLIN, Ind. - Sophomore C.J. Johnson (St. Francis) scored a career-high 32 points but it wasn't enough as the Yellow Jackets fell to 7-5 overall and 0-2 in the Heartland Conference.

KALAMAZOO 73, ADRIAN 62

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Brad Brinkman scored 14 points to lead Kalamazoo (4-9, 1-1 MIAA).

David Cultra led Adrian (6-7, 0-2) with 13 points. Mike Reinhard and Mark Bohlen added 11 points each.
