Owens CC women notch OT win over Cincinnati St.

CINCINNATI — Paige Wright got overtime started with a 3-pointer, and Kamilah Carter picked up a crucial three-point play Saturday as the Owens Community College women’s basketball team defeated Cincinnati State 89-82.

The No. 6 Express (21-2, 7-1 OCCAC) only trailed once in the game, but the Surge made it interesting down the stretch.

Owens stretched its lead to 53-37 with 14:25 left on a 3-pointer by Wright. However, Cincinnati (16-10, 7-3) answered with a 14-0 run to cut Owens’ lead to two.

With the Express clinging to a 69-62 lead after Carter drained a 3-pointer, the Surge went on an 8-1 run to force overtime.

In OT, Owens held Cincinnati scoreless for the final 1:02. Carter and Wright combined for seven points late to seal the win.

Carter and Eboni Adams each had 22 points for Owens. Ashley Tunstall had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

CINCINNATI STATE 80, OWENS 67

CINCINNATI — The No. 8 Express men’s basketball team saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end in a loss to No. 2 Cincinnati State.

The Express (20-5, 7-0 OCCAC) went on a 5-0 run, but the Surge answered with a 7-0 run to take a 28-18 lead with 8:21 left in the first half.

After Owens’ Tony Boykins opened the second half with a second chance bucket, the Surge (23-3, 9-1) went on a 14-0 run to take a 56-36 lead with 15:37 left.

The Express only got as close as 12 on a layup and a free throw from Shavon Gayle with 1:02 remaining. Gayle had a game-high 20 points.
