Bowling Green hockey loses heartbreaker to Northern Michigan

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Philip Beaulieu scored with six seconds remaining in overtime Saturday as the Northern Michigan Wildcats beat the Bowling Green State University ice hockey team 3-2 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play at the Berry Events Center.

With the victory, the Wildcats (13- 10-3, 11-5-2-2 WCHA) moved into second place in the league all alone. 

No. 14 Bowling Green (12-8- 6, 9-4-5-2 WCHA), which had 4-game win streak snapped in 5-2 loss Friday, got goals from Mitch McLain and Cameron Wright in regulation.

Atte Tolvanen had 19 saves for Northern Michigan. Ryan Bednard finished with 21 saves for the Falcons.

McLain got BG on the board at the 7 minute, 47 second mark of the first period, off an assist by Max Johnson.

Troy Loggins tied it with 18:05 left in the second, then Jordan Klimek gave Northern Michigan a 2-1 lead with 32 seconds remaining in the period.

But Wright tied it with 1:29 to go in regulation, with Bednard pulled for the extra attacker. Alec Rauhauser and McLain assisted on the goal.

The Wildcats outshot the Falcons 24-22. Northern Michigan went 1-of-5 on the power play, while Bowling Green was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

The Falcons host Alaska Anchorage in a two-game league series starting at 7:37 p.m. Friday.
