16-year-old indicted in March 1 shooting
4/12/2011A 16-year-old Toledoan certified in Lucas County Juvenile Court to stand trial as an adult was indicted by a grand jury Monday on several charges.
Ja'Varr Winters was charged with aggravated robbery, felonious assault, and attempt to commit murder, all with gun specifications. If convicted, he faces up to 23 years in prison.
The teenager was first ordered detained in juvenile court March 8 for the shooting of a man during an apparent robbery the week before. The incident occurred at 2:40 p.m. March 1 in the 1100 block of Pinewood Avenue.
Authorities said he approached a man on the street and shot the victim twice, once in the chest and once in the leg. The 56-year-old victim was hospitalized.
Juvenile Judge Connie Zemmelman certified the Winters youth to stand trial as an adult in the charge on March 31 and ordered him held in the Lucas County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond.
