TEMPERANCE -- The Bedford Township Planning Commission public hearing on the request from Whitman Ford to change the commercial zoning on 18 acres of dealership land will be at 7 p.m. April 27.

The meeting will be in the township hall on Jackman Road.

Jon Whitman, president of the Temperance business, wants to rezone the property to C-3 for general commercial development. The farmland, which is north of Sterns Road and adjacent to the dealership, is largely zoned for C-2 commercial use with a small portion of the parcel zoned for professional business office.

If approved, all but about 11 acres of the 43 acres of Whitman family property on Lewis Avenue and Sterns Road would be zoned C-3 commercial, the least restrictive form of zoning for retail development.

The land under review includes about eight acres that was the subject of a recent legal battle stemming from a zoning request sought in 2008 to have the land changed from residential to C-2. The township board rejected the change and Monroe County Circuit Judge Joseph Costello, Jr., reversed the decision, giving Mr. Whitman the zoning he wanted.

After the application is reviewed by the planning commission, it will go to the Monroe County Planning Commission. Both panels can make a recommendation on the change or not take action. The final decision will rest with the Bedford Township Board.
