NEW YORK — A California finance researcher has been convicted by a federal jury in an insider trading scheme.

Winifred Jiau was convicted Monday of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and wire fraud, and of securities fraud. The jury deliberated less than a day.

Jiau, of Fremont, Calif., was among 13 people arrested last year on charges she conspired to accept cash and gifts in exchange for financial information. Most of the other defendants pleaded guilty.

The 43-year-old worked for two years as a consultant for Primary Global Research, a Mountain View, Calif.-based company. Born in Taiwan, she is a U.S. citizen.

She faces steep fines and a possible prison term of 20 years when she is sentenced Sept. 21.
