A 17-year-old Toledoan was certified to stand trial as an adult on charges tied to a 2010 homicide after he waived his right to a hearing Thursday in Lucas County Juvenile Court.
Marques Torres of Buckeye Street was charged with murder in the May 15, 2010, death of Gabriel Morales, 42, who was found in East Toledo near Raymer Elementary School.
The teenager waived his right to a hearing with the understanding that he would face a charge of voluntary manslaughter when indicted in common pleas court.
He was ordered held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
Mr. Morales’ body was discovered early that morning at Raymer Boulevard and Nevada Street by fire and police crews.
He died of head injuries, but the manner of death was under investigation.
Authorities believe the suspect, who was 16 at the time, used the handle of a hydraulic floor jack to strike the victim.
