Former Findlay funeral director found guilty of abusing corpse
7/7/2011FINDLAY — A former Findlay funeral director who admitted he failed to embalm and refrigerate a corpse at his funeral home pleaded no contest Thursday and was found guilty of abuse of a corpse.
Gregory Routson was placed on probation for one year by visiting Judge Richard Markus in Hancock County Common Pleas Court. He also was ordered to pay a $500 fine and obtain mental health counseling. The judge noted that Mr. Routson had voluntarily surrendered his Ohio funeral director’s license, saying, “His career is over.”
Defense attorney Jon Richardson said Mr. Routson was already enrolled in mental health counseling.
The Routson Funeral Chapel on Osborn Avenue was shut down and Mr. Routson’s license suspended in June 2010 by the State of Ohio Board of Emblamers and Funeral Directors after the board received a complaint that, among other things, Mr. Routson had partially embalmed a body and left it unrefrigerated for 13 days.
